Does asparagus affect the smell of your...

....pee?

It’s asparagus season. There seems to be some debate as to why it happens. It’s even called “asparagus pee”. I even read that it all stinks, just some people can’t smell it. What? That seems easy to debunk. Get someone else to take a sniff.

Well? You?

HardDrive 05-07-2020 07:27 PM

Oh yeah.

There is a spice commonly used in Indian cooking, fenugreek. Try some fresh. It comes out of your skin for a couple days afterwards.

vash 05-07-2020 07:28 PM

Cool! Fenugreek.

Penicillin does it to me as well. It actually smells like asparagus, I think. Been awhile.

I'm glad we're finally getting to the serious questions.

Yes - Yes it does.

I've heard that whether you can smell Asparagus pee or not is a genetic thing, just like how some folks hate the taste of Cilantro.

It doesn't change the smell of my pee. I think that may actually be related to the fact that I have gout. (Because asparagus os supposed to be linked to gouty attacks.) I'm guessing that just as my body doesnt metabolize purines and pyrimadines properly (which predisposes me to gout), it doesn't metabolize something in asparagus properly, which is why I'm not excreting that scented byproduct in my urine.

Super hoppy beer (like IBU above 40) does it to me*.

Or maybe it's the liver failure. Hard to tell. Need more experimentation.

*No, you dumbazzes, beer doesn't make my pee smell like asparagus. It just makes my pee smell funny.

Negative ghost rider. I have gout and whhooee. I smell it.

LWJ 05-07-2020 08:18 PM

Absolutely!

I told my very young children that asparagus was "magical." And that the only way to find the magic was to eat it.

They did.

I think the gout connection makes sense. Beer is supposed to be the worst for gout.

Sugar Crisp, like nothing else!

I can smell it within an hour of eating it. I piss and it smells like an asparagus field (yeah, I know it grows underground). On the upside, my farts smell fairly decent.

WPOZZZ 05-07-2020 09:10 PM

I only ate asparagus once as it was in my alfredo. Gave me an upset stomach so I'm not sure if I would have smelled the pee because...

rwest 05-08-2020 01:34 AM

I remember the smell when I was younger, but I have been broiling it a few times a week for months and haven’t smelled it; might be because I had a pituitary adenoma removed over a year ago and I think my sense of smell was affected by it.

Another poster mentioned Super Sugar Crisp- I remember that from a kid too, haven’t had it since. Do they still sell it?

I am an anti-cilantro person and asparagus make my pee smell funny

Eat the asparagus with a ton of beets and you can have stinky red pee. Sort of a two-fer :D

Nope, it doesn't grow underground.

And if you don't harvest it when it's a young stalk, then you end up with

Yup, if you let it grow out of control, it is a giant PITA to remove!

I always knew I was really special!

I don't smell any change in my urine after eating asparagus, and cilantro is just gross added to food. Soap is close to to describing the taste, but it is bitter unpleasant yucky taste. Like adding ketchup to ice cream, blech.

From the folks that hate Cilantro, I've heard the same thing, "soap".

Mike Andrew 05-08-2020 05:33 AM

Yep, it sure does. However, one of my fave foods.
And, it is hard to get rid of if allowed to grow out of control. Took a few years to rid my garden of it after we moved in and the PO had let it go.
