The Future
many things changed after the 1918 Flu pandemic
what do you think will change (or what things changing now will be accelerated) as this pandemic winds down? |

The 1918 flu affected the middle aged disproportionately. We came out of it with fewer kids and fewer workers, and fewer combatants in WWII. It changed us in ways relating to our humanity - civil rights, civic responsibility.

Not much if somebody comes up with vaccine. Otherwise there will be allotta deaths until the so-called 'herd immunity' kicks in.
The asymptomatic spreaders present a real problem. I can't comprehend any defense against it. |

I hope any 'vaccine' using 'live virus cultures' is as carefully vetted and tested.
Before any distribution It should be better than the proven and known cures. (holding my breath in the meantime)

Politicians become much more skilled at wielding fear.

You wanking nunces.. None of the above..
The CV in of it self is a transitory problem which is merely the agent or catalyst of change. The Global Economy of Scale is DEAD, DEAD, DEAD... America has turned out to be the little pigs house of Straw where it took only the big bad CV to huff and puff and blow it away. American have been so stupid as they could never imagine in this wonderful age of technology that a simple virus could wipe them out.. the government in one month has put an extra 2.5T on the deficit...for a total of apx 3.5T deficit as of now..with it likely to go higher. The FED has printed and pumped in apx 2.5T all in just a little more than a month. With the FED prepared to go over 10T on the balance sheet... THEY ARE ALL IN...WITHOUT CAUTION... THERE IS NO TOMORROW IF THEY DO NOT GO ALL IN We have not as of yet had the coming tsunami of credit defaults and BK's hit the system... DEMAND has crashed and burned..where millions of jobs are permanently gone forever. This is going to leave a society of welfare, food stamp, medicaid and rent assistance receipt-ants. The The alternative is CIVIL UNREST AND CHAOS.. The indespensible corporations will have the FED as a silent partner and be zombie corporations in a zombie economy.

Best case? A lot of the full swing left lib agendas that have been creeping up in our Western decadent societies will have less fuel after facing something truly overwhelming like this pandemic. Back to basic important stuff instead of all this identity and gender nonsense.

I see the biggest changes as more masks wearing in the states while in public like Asian countries do now. I suspect federal buildings and airport checkpoints will continue to have the scanners, and empty your pockets stemming from 9/11, and just add in a temperature reading of each person. And the feds really want to slip in the contact tracing or tracking of everyone. It is all "for the children" of course.

The usual doom and gloom of TABS is the only predictable aspect of this scenario. I don't know if any of his reasoning uses analogy or just pessimism but I believe that both of those positions create blind spots and are more than a little prone to defeatism.
We all know that each disaster, emergency or epidemic takes place in its own context. The state of our nation in every case 1918, 1958 and so on played a role in exacerbating or mitigating the lasting impact of the event. Our economy recovered back then and several times more since. Our economy and society will still exist on the other side of this crisis. Changed yes, but no one can know what the future will look like by looking backwards. I choose to look for the sunrise, not the sunset.

I think there wii be a lot more tele-medicine. Our doctor is using it now and it works so well I don’t see him stopping. Only about half of his patient visits require an actual in-person exam. I like it because I don’t even have to leave the house to get a prescription renewed. I used to have to drive 45 minutes to see the sleep doc. (Insurance won’t pay for CPAP supplies without a report from the doc that you are actually using it). Now I just upload the data from the machine’s data card, answer a few questions and bam! Done.
