I remember "TG&Y", we had one on Valparaiso, Florida, and I remember a store in Niceville called "Grant's."
I remember Montgomery Ward and Woolworth also. Sent from my SM-S916U using Tapatalk

We had a Walgreens before they changed to what they are today.
In the 50's they had large lunch counters that were always busy...the balance of the store was a five and dime.

Gibsons Discount Center
for those that grew up in TX. Ours in the HEB ( Hurst, Euless, Bedford) area of DFW burned down in the late 70's as we watch and listened as the ammo pop off as it burned... It had everything you wanted as a kid! https://www.mysanantonio.com/lifestyle/article/gibson-discount-store-17604090.php

We had one in Wellington NZ called Kirkcaldie & Stains. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kirkcaldie_%26_Stains
It had been there since 1863. It was where the upper middle classes went shopping. The quality was excellent. Royal Doulton crockery, Italian men's suits, even the lunch room were wonderful. But today's buyer just wanted cheaper cheaper more disposable rubbish, and all the old girls who shopped tere on a regular basis were dying off of old age. |

We had a JAFCO in Olympia WA where I grew up. I found a JAFCO box with a 1970 914 I bought a few years back. The original owner bought a replacement cassette player for it there in CA. I remember going through their catalog along with the SEARS before Christmas every year.

The other long forgotten (at least in my experience) is the true 'men's clothing store'. Not the Warehouse or Jos Banks. The place where you went to get suits, slacks, and sport coats. But as a kid, I could never figure out why they were called sport coats since I never saw anyone wearing one to play softball or whatever.
When my father died, I got several of his ties, which I'm pretty sure all came from Samuel's men's shop in Oak Ridge Tennessee. The same guys worked there for decades and knew their customers, ditto for the tailors. ![]()
