Weather Station

Getting tired of carrying my ladder down to the boat house to reset my La Crosse weather station.

What is everyone using?

Scott Douglas 05-13-2020 09:43 AM

I used to have a La Crosse station. When it went belly up I got one of these:

Acurite is the name hidden by the yellow towel.
Works well for us. I've had to replace batteries about once a year or so on avg.

Davis Vantage Pro 2.
Wife thought I was crazy when I put it up 10 years ago, now she watches it more than I do.
Had to replace the anemometer, and resolder a raingauge sensor.
I have to go up on the roof every 1-2 years. Solar powered, on same small battery for 10yrs.
Worth every penny.

I use Alexa.
She is usually spot-on.

I had the same when I was in the house. I had 2 sets of remote sensors. One set of sensors was temp (with a fan and cover), and rain and mounted on the fence about 5' over the grass in the back yard. It was wirelass with battery and solar backup. The other set of sensors were anemometer and weather vane with wireless with battery and solar backup. I can't remember which set of sensors had the humidity sensor, but seems most likely it was with the temp and rain sensors. Central unit inside the house. I think I had that for 5-10 years. I never had a problem. I don't think I ever even had to replace a battery.

My problem here in houston is that when you ask for Houston weather, they might be giving you weather from someplace 30-60 miles away. 30-60 miles can mean 20*, rain or shine, windy or not. I don't want to know the weather somewhere else. I want to know MY weather.

And almost worth what you're paying for it. :D

And more accurate than KC's report.

You might be able to fix that by changing your location to your zip code in the settings.
I live in a small rural area..and her/their forecast is unique to my area.

I've had an AcuRite 01540M (actually an older, similar model to this) for maybe seven or eight years. It's mounted on a pole in the open about 125 ft. away from my house. I think I changed the batteries once and looked at them last year again. They were fully charged. The solar panel which powers the fan also assists the batteries. I paid about $60 at Costco when they had them on sale. The new, similar models seem to cost around $120. If it died, I'd get a replacement.

Davis Vantage Pro for 15 years. It has been great and very accurate compared with nearby Weather Underground stations. My anemometer just recently stopped reporting but I think it is rodent damage to the connecting wires. Older tech but very high build quality.

I push a button and say "Hey Siri what's the weather?"

pete3799 05-13-2020 05:02 PM

Thanks gents. This was the information I was looking for.
The Davis series are nice, but pricey. Lots of AcuRite versions out there.
I didn't really think about the solar powered ones, now it might be the way I will go.

15 years ago I got the Davis Vantage Vue for my dad as a Christmas present. As a retired pilot he loved it. When he died, I took it down, and it has been at my house for well over 10 years. I had to replace the anemometer plastic part that catches the wind from when a hail storm broke the plastic part.

We had a thunderstorm come though last night. It is just interesting to know we received 0.86 inches of rain last night.

But I would also need a squirt gun....just to round it up ;)

I’ve wanted a Vantage for years. However, I’m too chicken to get on my roof (3 stories up there, no access except by ladder).

I did not put mine on my roof. I ended up using a 12 foot steel pole that has three hose clamps to the metal fence pole of my stockade fence. My neighborhood HOA rules say no visible antennas or storage building from the street in front of the house. I likely have a slightly lower wind speed recorded than reality, but rain and temperature are the same. My neighbor keeps saying he will get a receiver like I have in my home office to see the reading. As yet he has not done so.
