my wife threw a dart at a map and it landed on St Paul Minnisota.
when she gets bored she likes to look at house prices in other areas. she was, "ooooh, we can get a cute house for $230,000!" (we call Craftman style homes "Grimm House". there was an awesome Craftman in that TV show, Grimm)
i replied, "do you know how cold it gets there?" "we can get double paned windows" "i think they invented SPAM (the canned meat) there" "i like SPAM fried rice" "throw another dart - we are not retiring in St Paul". so, i ask..it gets cold there right? how cold. i think the polar vortex hit there. the place looks nice tho..and my favorite fresh water fish to catch is the Walleye. i think its Walleye ground zero there.

When I read the thread title I thought "give her another dart"
![]() Granted, I haven't been to the city or state, but there's probably a reason for that.

My nephew just moved back after 3 years in St Paul and 2 yrs in ND on construction projects. Bitter cold is real and they saw -20F, in summer the state bird is the mosquito, and walleye are really just freshwater barracuda and mean business.
On the plus side they really enjoyed the life pace and the people. Infrastructure is good and well designed for the climate. Cost of living is very low. They are now in Huntington Beach and their 2 teenage girls are adapting quickly.

Have her point a bit lower...like maybe TN. Warm, no state taxes and about the same home prices.

Visit in May, June, first half of July, Sept, or Oct and you will love it! Tons of outdoor activities and plenty of places to fish.
Late July and August are the summer months and are HOT. The other 6 months could have snow on the ground. The SPAM plant is a couple of hours SW of there. And the Mall of America is a shopping mecca. Great healthcare there and an hour south at Mayo Clinic.

If you retire in St Paul, you will also want a cabin 'up north'.
'Up north' is any lake or small town north of Minneapolis/St Paul. There are a few Pelicans in/from that area.

You better learn how to ice fish. It is a big deal. Not sure about the fishing part, but lots of hard liquor consumed.
I have a friend who loved it there. Nice town with some great old houses and good place to raise a family on a decent corporate salary with manageable cost of living. But retirement? Are you kidding me? You want to spend half of the days you have left indoors? Have her throw another dart, tell her to aim closer to the ocean and further south. G |

Vash,
Check out Boise. Fishing. Check. Biking. Check. Cheap. Check. Hunting. Check. Not really redneck in a redneck state. I like it. I did this the other day. $600K buys something VERY special in Boise! |

Hmmm, spent most of my life in Toronto and it is North of that, try hanging the dart map up about a foot. Unless you really like snowmobiling.

Lots of choices under the price of the MN home ($230K in TN). But a little more would get a whole lot more house.
To the east, a cabin in the woods near the national forest (lots of public land): https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/153-County-Road-360-Niota-TN-37826/41780363_zpid/ To the west, a large house in a nice neighborhood: https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/911-Breckenridge-St-Brownsville-TN-38012/2080024810_zpid/ or if you want an older home (built for the Governor in 1898?) https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/609-N-Vine-St-Winchester-TN-37398/41284323_zpid/

I live in a heavy mosquito area. I have not remembered more aggressive mosquitoes then when I was in Minneapolis a few years back.
And it gets surprisingly hot in the summer!

I call 30 miles west of St. Paul home. Yes it gets hot, 100* and very cold -20* without the wind chill... Mosquitos, check. I’ve been bitten a dozen times already and it isn’t even wet. The rain multiplies the population overnight.
Before life as we know it now... the restaurants and entertainment are lights out. We have hunting and fishing year round if you want. September is by far the best time of year to visit. Hit me up Vash if you come visit! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
