Hey Milt - I hope you'll fab up a run of those rear bumpers you designed.

Best looking mod I've seen for the 1974-89 cars.

Where did this come from? Jerking chains?

I took that car to the So Cal All-Porsche Swap & Car Display in Anaheim circa 2014 and listened to the comments as folks walked by. Understand that this was a hard core Porsche gathering with a heavy R Gruppe presence.

All negative. Gruppenmeister wouldn't even go look at it. I was an R Gruppe member at the time. Took it over to a party at Techweenie's house and he thought it sucked. I realized then that my thoughts about the Porsche world were not very well supported.

Then, suddenly, after my wife was injured in a rear-ender in that Carrera with 'those' bumpers, I removed them, sold the car and said "adios" to 911 ownership.

Within months the prices or air cooled Porsches went out of my reach confirming my disassociation with the cars. Oh, we still have a 2000 Boxster that we've owned for 18 years, but people make fun of those (too).

Not a fun group of car enthusiasts for me. Why am I still around? Beats the fook out of me.

(subscript: why do we gather at meets? Why do we gather here? We want others to see our participation in the hobby or whatever you want to call it. We want to be proud of what we bring no matter how humble. When people tell you your car sucks, that's not something that makes one want to continue — — it was time.)

WPOZZZ 05-18-2020 04:29 PM

Milt, were you the one that fabbed up a longhood style front bumper for the impact bumper cars?

KFC911 05-18-2020 04:50 PM

I saw the post in the other thread...didn't know what it was about....thought it was "positive" fwiw. If it was a jab at you....well, that pretty much sums up what PPOT has become for some folks
imo...and sucks.

Best to ya Milt....appreciate ya man!

. . .

It's been that way a long time; just look at how many years Kachi has been taking heat for his 911 nose training wheels creation (posting a pic of that is a common retort when someone doesn't like what that guy writes). A large contingent of animalz up in here! :)

Milt, I don't know what thread or what's been said, but some of those R Gruppe guys are nuts. Its their way or highway even isn't their fooking car similar to historical Nazis for homes I have dealt with. They always have some negative siht to say and are never satisfy with anything but they ain't paying for it and it isn't even their house. I just finished up a 72 stripped out track car but its registered for the street. Ride and sound like crap. Straight pipe. I never take it to shows because I just don't want to hear from them or have to answer why I butchered up a perfectly good car. Then there are the nuts and bolts guys that will tell ya its the wrong bolt. Do you really give a rat's ass about what they think? There's a bunch of pretty good R Gruppe guys too, but some are like high school all over again, you gotta belong. When someone ask if I was going to joint R Gruppe now that I have the car. The answer was a fast, NO.

rusnak 05-18-2020 07:00 PM

I remember those bumpers.

From what I recall, we were all fairly impressed with the amount of work that went into them.

Personally, I loved the black leather jacket. Not sure where the negative comments came from.

What would the 6 y.o. me say? Once per year you get cake and ice cream and people treat you nicely. The rest of the year everyone sucks.

MRM 05-18-2020 07:58 PM

It’s hard to grasp context in an Internet post, but it seems like a genuine compliment to me. I think I remember when you were doing those bumpers, back in the day. I’m not very connected to other Porsche owners in real life, so I don’t know what the popular opinion is, but I am surprised that you got a negative reaction to your design.

You’ve posted enough of your work over the years to show you are a true craftsman and a magician with tools and your own sweat. From my perspective of what you’ve shown here on the board, your taste and design sense are exquisite. You’re an inspiration to people like me who were born all thumbs and are barely trusted with a pair of pliers and a screwdriver. Anyone who puts you down can kiss my @ss.

RSBob 05-18-2020 08:41 PM

Milt, thought and still think the front bumper was insanely good. I was really disappointed that it was a one off since I would have popped for one for my 82. Signed, one of the R Gruppe nuts.

Yep....on both counts...

Folks like Milt (and many others) inspired me to DIY and buy my 911 years ago and I would not be here without them...

I remember :)...

I would NEVER repost that! Is it OK if I still giggle like a school girl when someone else does :D?

WPOZZZ 05-19-2020 03:37 AM

I thought those bumpers were cool!

rfuerst911sc 05-19-2020 03:39 AM

I thought I would chime in as I was the lucky guy that purchased " those bumpers " from Milt . At the time I had an SC coupe and I hated the look of the impact bumpers . When I received Milt's bumpers I literally sat in my garage and stared/drooled for a long time in my opinion they were perfect ! When I did the initial fitment before painting them I found out I had to do NOTHING to them they fit perfect .

Pretty amazing for a " one off hand build " . I got positive comments on the car everywhere I went , from the grocery store to PCA events . I ended up trading that car/bumpers to Jake Raby in exchange for him building me my killer engine in my Boxster S . I recently found out Jake sold that car/bumper to someone local here in Georgia . I hope the new owner appreciates what he has .

As many of us know Milt is an old time craftsman , his attention to detail and his ability to transfer an image from his head to his hands is amazing . I wish I had his skills . He and I became " internet friends " over those bumpers and we still are long distance buddies :D . Bottom line is I really didn't care what ANYBODY thought of those bumpers . I loved them and that's all that mattered to me . SmileWavy

LWJ 05-19-2020 05:51 AM

Serious. I liked the bumper.

techweenie 05-19-2020 06:39 AM

When doing custom work on an iconic car, it's best to plan to please yourself, and ignore what others have to say about it.

rusnak 05-19-2020 06:45 AM

The Singer 911 actually reminded me of Milt's bumpers.

911boost 05-19-2020 07:33 AM

Does anyone actually care about what RWebb says?

If you liked em Milt, who cares about others.

stevej37 05-19-2020 08:09 AM

One of the strangest threads I've read.
Looked to me that he was just complimenting something.

That is a perfectly healthy attitude.

Are there pictures of these bumpers so that I, arbiter of of taste, keeper of all opinions worth knowing, may cast my gaze upon them and pass judgement?:D

Seriously, I'd like to see what they look like. I never liked the impact bumpers. Just curious, Milt.

Geneman 05-19-2020 08:29 AM

CAN Someone post a pic of these bumpers. thanks

Ditto, I was going to request the same thing.

vash 05-19-2020 08:42 AM

any link to the original thread?

i have no idea what we are talking about. sound interesting.

i would hope as i age, i develop a thicker and thicker skin. i hope to get to the point where i could give a rat's ass what someone else thinks. i certainly don't want validation from anyone.

Zeke is talented beyond anything i ever could hope for in myself. move on Zeke, move on.

pwd72s 05-19-2020 08:52 AM

Milt, it was your car and you did what you wanted to do with it when it was yours. Kudos for that.

I resigned from R Gruppe when I decided it was just a car club...not the military where one had to follow orders. I didn't like having self appointed superior officers.
Many nice guys in that gruppe, but there is that handful..

Look 171? Semi accurate...the comparison to a high school clique...

LEAKYSEALS951 05-19-2020 09:00 AM

^^^^ This! As I aged....I reached that point....I think I was about 17 ;)

wilnj 05-19-2020 09:41 AM

Wow! I had seen a pick of the rear and was amazed that it wasn’t a more common approach. Never saw the front end.

That is amazing work.

Seahawk 05-19-2020 10:29 AM

They suck.

:D

I know a composite company that could knock those and other concepts out most ricky tick.

I am biased but in my opinion Milt's front bumper was the most elogant way to do a quasi long hood retrofit look . Getting rid of the ugly impact bumpers does a lot for the looks . Same for the rear . I would think if someone could re-pop these they would sell . I know longer have a 911 so I am not in the market .

KFC911 05-19-2020 10:53 AM

This thread has just gotten down right nasty now.....I sorta like my butt ugly UIBs....

Ugly Impact Bumpers ;)

But that's just me :D...

It was a genuine compliment. No Jerking chains at all. I meant what I said.

I have an early car, but thought you did a great job, as per MRM's more detailed post above.

Won 05-19-2020 11:40 AM

No one posted the rear bumper picture? Here it is from one of the threads:

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1217895584.jpg

Milt, I remember the original threads as well, and I was impressed by the bumpers! I for one am glad that you're back on the board, weren't you on a hiatus for a number of years? Also enjoying your projects on Facebook.

I get the point of "purists" but it's not my crowd.

RWebb 05-19-2020 11:46 AM

yes, it was the above rear bumper mod

the context was that milt had more spare time on his hands

if you don't want to manf. them yourself or with the help of TRE or a FG fab place, then I think you should license them to somebody

gordner 05-19-2020 11:52 AM

always loved those bumpers

Absolutely amazes me that folks could complain about that design. I think they look like they could have come out of Stuttgart. Milt was crapped on and Magnus is considered a genius. This really is a fooked up world.

Not just you - I like them, too, especially on a fat 911. And yes, giggling about the training wheels is allowed; how could it be avoided anyway!?!?

Shaun @ Tru6 05-19-2020 03:03 PM

It was an honor to be a tiny part of this extremely cool project. Got your PM Milt, will reply tonight.

I would just like to add “artist” to craftsman and magician.

greglepore 05-19-2020 04:00 PM

This was just ahead of its time. I would KILL for a set of those - or at least a rear as I have a ruf front.

As Richard said, he traded the car that these went to and then the car got sold. I have no idea where they are.

More importantly, and a hard lesson learned, don't take impact bumpers off any of the 911's that came with them. They do produce safety. A rigid bumper is why my wife got injured.

I wouldn't think of selling an aftermarket composite bumper given the liability. Those that do are running a large risk so I hope they have lots of product liability insurance AND a disclaimer that has to be signed saying, "For Off-Road use only."

I did have fun making those. That was the only benefit.

Randy, sorry I took you the wrong way. It's just that your statement popped up in a mutt thread. (?)
