what is the biggest Bluegill you have caught?
being on lockdown, i have been watching u-toob videos. mostly fishing ones.
there is a guy in Texas catching "big as his face" bluegill. i've never seen one so huge. big hump on the head and everything. mine have been embarrassingly tiny. biggest one is my flat hand size. maybe smaller. all that has done is make me want to find and catch one. it wont be around here. oh, a giant Crappie is on the list as well. this guy pulls them out and they are huge..he caught what looked like a 2lb Talapia. mind blown!! all an these residential tract-home ponds. in TEXAS. well? you have a farm pond with GIANT panfish?

My largest pond (less than 1 acre) has some crappie that one of my uncles transplanted a few at a time many years ago, but it's primarily a bass haven...and they don't coexist well in a small pond since they compete for spawning beds at the same time. Though I throw everything back 10lb bass included, I occasionally catch a nice crappie 1.5 lbs mebbe on a plastic worm. They are tasty but I digress
 ...I also have three grass carp (need a few more) that are BIGLY now...mebbe 3' long.... I call 'em Vashers.... so eat yer heart out  .

I've had bluegill snap 4 lb line. Don't know exactly how big they were since they were still in the water and that makes them look different... but they snapped 4 lb line.
KC mentions Crappie. I've caught bluegill bigger than some of the crappie in my dad's 9 acre body of water. But our big crappie are longer than the average bass we take out of there too.

9 acres is large enough to support both bass and crappie thriving...I'm surprised crappie have managed to do as well as they do in mine....grass cover keeps 'em safer. Bass like to eat....a lot
Are they crappie or croppie...I call em both ways. You got any 18-24" diameter snappers? I have four less than I used to a few years ago

I witnessed a tug of war between my nephew when he was about 10 years old and a snapper that was eating the fish on his stringer. It was EPIC! But the snapper finally let go and my nephew got back most of what was on his stringer.
I'll never forget him yelling HEY! It's eatin my fish!!

About 2lb while I was at Camp FISH (Fishing Instructional Seminar Headquarters) in Brainerd, MN when I was a wee tot. Brought home a trophy for it and one for filleting some many many pounds of fish for the end of week banquet.
It was in very shallow water, about a foot or two deep, and crystal clear in a little lagoon, beautiful. So tasty that night.

My wife pulled some some good sized bluegills out of the lake when we lived in Texas, not quite as big as dinner plate, but pretty close. We had many a fish fry.

There was a creek through our pasture when I was a kid and we used to go fishing there as 8 and 9 year olds. There were little blue gills there and a fish that looked exactly like a blue gill except its belly was an orange color. We used to call them "Punkin' seeds." Anybody know what they were? I never caught a blue gill (or a punkin seed) that was more that 6 ounces or so.

I remember about 20 years ago 5 of us hit the crappie hard. Caught a whole mess of them, probably 40-50 in less than 2 hours. I can't recall the biggest, but it was a damned good fish fry.
My brother just closed last week on a lake house on that lake, I just got a boat, and one of my other brothers is moving his pontoon to the lake. Good times are coming!

Grandparents once had a summer lake cottage. His bluegill plus her floured cast iron cooking was absolutely heavenly.
An award was given at dinner for whoever was best in show that day. A ceramic fish or turtle or bird was placed in front of your dinner setting. I was a turtle master swimming with a canoe trailing behind. Caught 26 in one day. Three or four at one log. The screech of scraping claws on Grumman aluminum is still ringing in the ears. Race them back into the water on the edge of bank at the end of the day. I caught plenty of turtles but never learned to fish.

My brother has a buddy that has a family farm with a 2 acre farm pond on it that was stocked with Bass years ago. The matriarch grandma that lived there would not allow anyone to fish on her pond, and she fed the fish from the shade of of a large tree.
She died off, and the new person in charge said go fish! The were pulling out giant Bass and ate them all. The big ones were eating the smaller ones and all that was in there were whoppers. The fish population skyrocketed with smaller fish and a variety of different species.

My biggest one for me was about 13" long and weighed about a pound, IIRC. It looked like a dinner plate with fins. Fought like crazy. It would slice though the water with that big, flat body and pound-for-pound was one of the best fighting fish I ever caught.
Right in the same area where I caught this bluegill, I saw a carp once that was every bit of 6' long - no exaggeration. It was unnerving seeing that big of a fish in a TVA lake.
