AC or refrigeration guys.

Since chest freezers are unobtainium right now I was thinking...could I use an air conditioner to bring a small space to freezing?

What if I built a small (3x3x5) well insulated box. Would an AC get it cold enough? How many BTUs needed?

To get it to freeze? No way, I don't think so.

I would keep looking. I lucked into one at Home Depot.

If I hadn’t found one, I was going to spend the money on a medium sized, scratch/dent refrigerator just for the freezer space.

This looks interesting

You "could" but it would require some more controls being added. Why is a chest freezer out? I have a small Criterion (I think that's the name) I bought from Menards a few years ago that has been great as a "keezer". That's a freezer converted to a kegorator using a temp control

With worries about food shortages, everyone has been buying them up.

Another thought is Restaurant Depot.

That makes sense I guess. If ya really need one I'd buy it and meet ya half way fb. I'm pretty sure I could find one local.

My desire for one is certainly fired up by the fact that my current freezer capacity is a joke. The thought of building one myself was more of "gee I wonder if that would be worth the effort".

I've been all around the net. I had ordered one from Loews that had the ship date moved twice, all the way out to October. I found one in Va but it was $200 to ship it. I asked my brother to go get it, but it disappeared within an hour.

I'm not losing sleep over a food shortage but if anyone has a line on a freezer I'm your huckleberry! So sure Nick, Ohio isn't that far!

edit: restaurant depot prices are waaaay nutz...11 cu ft $3K!!

You can't get it to freezing with a window a/c, but you can get it to 34 degrees (not sure that would be good enough for your use) with one of these controlling a window a/c.

I have two of them (generations 4 and 5 models), on two separate window a/c units, that I use to bring two different rooms down to very low temperatures (just the way I like it); have owned them for many years, and they have been trouble free and a real life-changer for me. They are expensive, though.

If you go to the company's website, it is packed with info about building coolers, sizing a/c units, quality unit recommendations, how to install and operate the device, etc.

Their website shows them cleared out for delivery and in store.

I called a bunch of stores when I was looking, HD, Lowes, PC Richard Appliance (regional place) and Karls (a local place). All were wiped out, no idea when anything was coming.

I'd better be at the top o that list!

This happened after Hurricane Sandy with gererators. Mine looked like an octopus as I was running several fridges for neighbors. Guys were getting $1K or more for small gennies.

AC or refrigeration guys.

So the 7cf Magic Chef I got from HD rang up as $229 which was already low considering they are unobtanium. Unfortunately, this one must have been hidden in back somewhere and brought out with a sale price of $188 on it.

The thought of flipping it for $600 did occur to me but I didn’t want to regret that if the outbreaks in the food supply get worse.
