Socket case on last legs -what to do for replacement?
 

My google-fu is weak, hopefully theres a cheap solution ive overlooked.

Got a cheap all in one socket set 25 years ago and the case is coming apart.

I want something like it, organized and portable. Wouldnt mind a bit more room.

I dont want a coffee can of sockets and bits. Thing is great except that its coming apart.

Ideas?

Box hardware stores have stuff but theyre full of tools already,

can you replace just the clear plastic 'window'?

do you like the way the case is laid out?

do you really use it or just open the toolbox drawer, then open the case and grab what you need

finally... I have seen people trying to create blow molded plastic cases for their socket sets - I swear that is true!

I had one from Black and Decker and the hinge part broke off. It was just a thin strip of plastic anyway - you know the kind.

Called up Black and Decker and they mailed me a replacement.

I've got something very similar without the plastic window in it.
If I were fixing this at home, I'd use one of my wife's old cutting mats that she uses when cutting material. It's thin enough that you could cut a piece that would fit inside the lid and cover the whole lid. Put some silicon caulk on it to hold it in place, I think it would stick.
Does your wife sew?

If the case and hinge mechanism is ok and only the clear
Sheet that is failing, find a good hobby or art supply store and buy a sheet of clear styrene. Remove old and epoxy new. If the hinge and/or latch mech is toast,,,,,

Time for a new set of tools. Donate those and buy a premium set that should come with a case.

How about a conventional tool box ? You said you wouldn't mind more space . There are plenty of socket organizers that could be used in a good ole hand carry tool box .

Doesn't have to be clear. Could be Aluminum or whatever you can score.

You can buy bit holders and socket holders and move all the tools into a tool box.

You will have to mod it a little for the ratchet, everything else should fit.

Sorry i should have said what was wrong: one clasp is gone, the other is real thin, the hinges are on their last legs. Injection molded plastic. I guess i could weld a metal frame for the holders... hinge, etc. seems like a lot of work though.

These are my small travel sockets for stuff away from garage. Ive got tool boxes but little things like drivers will get lost. I hate pawing through a bag of sockets.

Theres a ton of little pieces in there and its great to have all the sizes in order. Its pretty handy.

Im a super 3d printer skeptic but this might be a reasonable use for one. I couldn't care less about the window. Wish i could just buy another one, lame injection molded thing lasted a good long time. Theres lots of bad solutions for this.

Yea. cantdrv55 gave me a travel kit that I cherish. It’s saved my butt so many times. I treat the container very gently.

Easiest solution? Use those bits as spares, replace the whole thing.

This may sound stupid or desperate.

But you can just cut the bottom tray out and glue it into another case that is about the same thickness, or find a thin Pelican case.

It really depends on how much you want to spend.

"Sortimo" is a German company and they make great boxes but they are $$$.
However you'd only buy it once and fill it any way you like.
(Search Google for "Sortimo". You can buy from their US online store)
