Arisaka?
Is there a mark that looks like a chrysanthemum on the breech? |
The top one is a moisin. nagant. There are a thousand variants. A few quite valuable,
|
Top one is a Russian Moisen Nagant, bottom is a Japanese Arisaka Type 99. Both were commonly used in the Ballard Infantry.
|
Not seeing the logo, but i did look up the arisaki and realized I also have the bayonet for it.

The Moisin Nagant shoots the 7.62x54 rimmed (Russian) cartridge. Easy to find and relatively cheap.

What did they issue to the Magnolia branch? Something with a little more polish I assume.
I do appreciate the assistance, I had absolutely no idea what to even look up. |

The mosin nagant is a m44. 1960 manufactured year obviously. It is Eastern European. Romanian, Polish, or Hungarian. Would need better pictures to positively id.
If you're interested in selling. I have a 03 FFL. |
I believe my dad brought them home from Vietnam. I had seen one of them as a child but then not again until yesterday. I was working on cleaning out his shop and found them hidden. Probably been in the same spot for 25yrs.
Not selling due to the connection with my father. |
Arisaka
The Japanese rifle would have had a Chrysanthemum with 7 leaves on the top of the receiver where the ground spot is located. In many cases the "mum" was ground off when the rifle was surrendered. It would be either a 6.5mm or 7mm caliber. The little "legs" that fold out on each side of the rear sight are for leading aircraft when trying to shoot the plane down! Both of the rifles could use a good coat of oil.
|
Thank you for the additional info! They will definitely need some TLC if not some professional attention which they probably deserve.
|
I'm sure they will both clean up nicely. Depending on the care lavished before they were stored, they may even shoot acceptably. Neither is a "target" arm, or course, but both earned respect as very capable battle rifles. If the bores were suitably coated with some form of oil or preservative, they might be great good fun to take out and do a bit of shooting. Unless there is really obvious damage or structural corrosion, both should be safe enough with proper ammunition. I believe both calibers are still at least somewhat available, even if it takes a bit of looking to find them. They could both bring new meaning to those "Free Ballard!" bumper stickers... ;)
