I got in a bad car wreck 30 years ago and during recovery, I had a really sore back. I went to work as usual, wearing my loafers with leather soles. Then my mom told me to try SAS shoes. Her stores sold clothing and shoes, so she ordered me a pair. They aren't the most fashionable shoes, but they did help my back. The New Balance shoes I posted are made for people who land their foot in manner that creates discomfort. It forces the foot to land square. It's odd walking in them at first.

Couple a $35 Red Wing insole and your orthotics with them.

For all day fiddling around on concrete, you need support.

Wow. Those are more expensive than the NB shoes I am pushing. You are clearly not buying them for the looks but when a non-snazzy shoe sells for $200 that says something to it's structural integrity.

One downside to the New Balance is melting the nylon webbing. You can accelerate their wearing out with weld spatter. Plus if no socks in the summer you scream like a little girl when this happens.

Also compression socks help.

I have a pair, color scheme is the top right. Good shoes and I like wearing them.

Against popular opinion my favorite COMFORT shoe is barefoot, flip flops, and Vibram 5 finger shoes. Yes the gorilla feet style...I have worn them in snow, mud, hot sand, water, hell did the ATM cave tour (Belize) wearing them. Best, most comfortable footwear I have ever worn. That said, if you are in pain barefoot (smooth flooring) then these won't work for you. I am typing this with no shoes on, yes I am wearing clothes for the sick folks, but feet are a major extension of the human anatomy. We have grown up taught to keep them in check, restricted, I believe that message to be the cause of so many foot problems today.

I used to love Adidas Sambas. They have a classic all-around sneaker look, are cheap, (were) super comfy, and made for great driving shoes, too. I think I've had about 4 pairs of them over the past 25 years. But then I purchased a pair recently and they just don't have that same fit anymore. My feet actually hurt after wearing them. I thought they'd break in (though they never had to in the past), but they haven't. So I'm no longer recommending them.

I've got a pair of those. I actually wore them out trail running with the dogs. Now they have been "demoted" to being painting shoes. but I still love them.

I SWORE I would never ever wear slip on shoes, then my girlfriend bought me a pair....now I wear them ALL the time. They are awesome.

I’ve spent a fortune on shoes. When my metatarsal arthritis was raging I hobbled around on size 14 boots or running shoes with the toe box cut for more room. I made my own orthotics from carbon fiber plate. After getting my toe joints replaced I’m back in 10 1/2s and can wear almost anything.
The sports medicine doc I went to was useless. The custom orthotics place was $$$ and useless.
There are some on-line outfits that claim to make you custom orthotics but my experience with them was not good.
It’s a jungle out there.

Most people have tight calves, do stretches for this with the knee bent and straight a few times a day, for as long as you plan on walking around. Tight calf muscles cause myriad problems.

Cushioning and the amount of support are what I look at when I am recommending over the counter insoles. Superfeet are pretty good for a lot of people, Spenco also makes good products.
