Are your kids going to school this year ?

We have a 1st grader, a preschooler and a newborn and are having quite a few discussions about what to do this year. Both schools are planning to be open when school starts back up.

Homeschooling is sounding like a pretty good choice for this year but we haven't made a final decision yet. Both kids love going to their schools.

What are you guys doing about school for your children this year?

Grandson was in Preschool last year until CV19 hit. I think it has been decided that he will not go back this fall.

The problem is that having him go to school increases exposure enormously. He's then in contact with every other kid that has no hygiene, plus the teachers. And every kid is in contact with parents. Who knows who the parents are in contact with or if they are the folks that think this is a hoax or whatever. Since this is not school, we can keep him out without any worry about setting him behind.

It would probably be a much tougher decision if he was in the first grade. But then my wife home schooled his mother, so that might be the route that we took.

I would send mine in a heartbeat (4th, 8th, 11th) but wouldn’t bet money on getting that choice. Despite low numbers in a sparsely populated state we have had some of the most draconian lockdown measures, I’ll be shocked if they go back for real.

I am hoping our daughter entering 9th grade can at least go on a rotating schedule of 2 days a week, but at the rate infections are growing in Dallas, I am doubtful.

The kids won't be at any real risk. If there are others at home that are in the at risk category it might make a difference.

My wife teaches Pre-K.

She was doing one more year till our son graduates HS then we were moving most likely to Austin.

As of this week Denton schools are still opening on time.

My wife is done, not going back.

Will probably call her Principal next week to let her know and give her time to find someone.

With two months to go before the new school year, reports are that the school board hasn't even met to discuss their plans.

I'm going to have to say "no, she isn't going back."

We have an 11th, 9th and 7th grader. I’ll be sending them assuming it’s open but I’m not confident it will be a choice we get to make.

It is still a mystery what the schools will actually do, can't make any plans.

The high schooler will have school. It's a private school with about 100 kids per grade. They will offer a hybrid system, where half the kids will be on campus, and the other half will be at home on Zoom/teleconference. Of the half of the kids who are on campus for that day, half will be in class physically, and half will be somewhere else on campus on Zoom/teleconference. It's an imperfect system, but they are trying to give the kids some feel for the community of school in addition to just the academics.

The junior high school child: We have not heard. It will be a cluster uck, as it is public (LAUSD) and has a student body of about 2000 kids. No matter what LAUSD does, it will be a disaster. If I didn't have to work for a living, I would home school her for certain.

For the elementary schooler, his school (public, but charter) has stated that they won't make a decision for another couple weeks, as the public health situation remains so fluid. But it's a charter school, it's smallish, and the school handed out computers to all needy families this spring when the pandemic hit, so I'm hopeful they'll have a semi-decent solution.

My kids go to private (Catholic) schools and it was still a CF going online, so that’s not exclusively a public school issue. If they go online again we will probably strongly push my soon to be Junior to the KS public online school system, which is free and supposed to be reasonably good. I have no faith in the morons at his high school putting together a quality system, and he’s almost done anyway. He plays club lacrosse so his activities aren’t tied to being in a normal high school. For the younger kids we will persevere in the hopes that this BS blows over soon and they can return to normal life.

Our daughter is going into the 4th grade. Her school has announced a "hybrid" system where the kids will be in school 4 days a week for 2.5 hours a day. Fridays will be online only. How can our kids get a decent education like that? Needless to say we are exploring other options for the next school year!

FX: I have heard various iterations of that bandied about. In a two-parent, one-income family that's doable. But for two working parents or especially for single parents, I don't see how those ideas are going to work out.

I have two school aged children. They both go to school in a district that is very diverse. Because of that, the district is really having a hard-time making policy. I get it.

I was just offered a job in a less populated area teaching 8th grade math. This school has it dialed in. am/pm schedule, M-Th, Friday everyone is distant learning.

School is going to be hard for working parents until there is a vaccine I think.

Yeah out here too. Executive order for Online instruction at first via moodle, canvas, black board, ect. Kids too poor to have internet. Left behind.

I honestly don't understand why they don't go back to school sooner. Avoid cold/flu/covid season, and resume later.

As I understand it, the schools have to provide their plans 30 days before start of school. It cannot be entirely distance learning but it’s up to the individual districts to decide on how much is online.

I know for my kids, the last 3 months of school was the equivalent of having a sub every day for every class. Nothing but busy work.

It’s another nail in the coffin for single parents, that’s for sure. I’m lucky that my wife stays home with our kids and can manage it, but I really feel for the single parents or those that need both parents working to make it. Yet another casualty of this entire mess.

Our problem has been that at my daughter's college (URI) gave housing priorities to freshman and transfers, seniors getting last priority. Since she was planning on living on campus as a senior, totally threw a wrench in the plans.

My son's school we are still waiting on. He is dyslexic and lives at the school. The on line teaching just doesn't work so well with this group.

True, and sadly purely political.
