Help - What is this tool?

Storage wars landlord just ran across another strange tool. Water hose fitting on one end and ear muff looking water exits at the other end.

I'm stumped.

Feel much better now. I was thinking it was some tool used by sadists where the ear muff things are clamped over your ears and the other end hooked up to a hose.

Outboard motors use water for cooling.

The water comes in through 'inlets' or ports - at the lower part of the motor - the part that sits in the water.

Those "muffs" slide over the part of the motor where the water 'inlets' or ports are. Attach your garden hose. Turn it on. Now you have water supplied to the motor so it can be run out of the water.

Why run a boat motor out of the water? To flush out the salt water after a day on the sea. Or while doing mechanical work on the motor while it sits on your driveway.

Also - just like a car in storage - the engine or motor should be started and run periodically to keep the fluids and mechanicals in order.

We used to just put the old Johnson Sea Horse in a metal trash can clamped to the side and fill it with water. Fun way to check it out before going on vacation with the flat back canoe.

We called them boat muffs. That's a nice pair has water diverted to both sides, ours just did one side.

Actually works better.

We were chasing an overheating issue on my buddies I/O.

Neighbor stops by and muses, "that's a big motor, you sure the muffs are pushing enough water?"

Since we were out of ideas we grabbed a garbage bin, filled with water, no more overheating.
