Man breaks his hip...they cut off his 1ft braided ponytail

It sounds crazy....they apologized and gave no reason why it was done.
He is 73 and Indigenous. His life plan was to pass his braid down to his sister when he passes on. Now, he won't be able to grow it back in time.
I would want some answers also.

I don't know much about Canada or Canadians other than what I've read here and there and seen on TV and in movies.

Based on ^that^ it seems that there has been (in the past at least) prejudice against indigenous folks and government programs designed to erase their culture (similar to the US, and Australia, and probably a lot of other places).

Maybe some of that prejudice is still floating around and someone with that prejudice was around this guy.

Or maybe there's a moron working in the hospital.

Both seem equally plausible.

It's sad that it happened.

Get an operation you get a little shower cap to go with the gown. I’m guessing it wouldn’t fit underneath so they trimmed it rather than bother to try to tuck it in.

Same as you get shaved where they are slicing.

Wonder if they shave women’s hair the same.

I've had two major operations in the last 7 years....one for a fractured femur and another for two fractured vertebrae.
Never had a little shower cap with the gown. My hair is always on the long side.

Had 3 hernias fixed in May. Got a cap. Don’t have much hair.
Every time I’ve gone under a knife I’ve had one, so I guess it depends where you are.

I had my hip replaced. No shower cap. They worked on my hip, not my head.

Lot of bc residents are really pissed about the rising power of the natives. Saw it more than ever this summer. Passive petty stuff.

Not sure why they had to cut off his hair. First off, everyone--patient included--wears a surgical cap (like a fancy hairnet) when in the OR. Or at least in every OR in which I think I've ever worked. They don't wear a face mask, but surgical cap yes.

I'd guess it was an anesthesia issue, the reason for cutting his braid. Perhaps the masked airway couldn't be attached to a rubber strap that goes around the back of the patient's head. Still, I'm surprised the anesthesiologist wouldn't be able to work around that issue. To cut off someone's hair--particularly when you know it's gotta be important to them--and then not mention it to the patient afterwards is really odd. The whole environment of the OR is to respect the patient's wishes, especially when they aren't conscious enough to speak for themselves. That's the core belief of every nurse, after all--to be the patient's advocate. Heck, whenever we cut across a patient's tattoo, we always go to lengths to sew them back up with the tattoo aligned, even though patients usually graciously tell us not to worry about it.

I'm with you on that one.

My sister won a big grant from the city she lives in to make house repairs. Windows, HVAC, electrical , plumbing, etc. They dug down 12 feet from the front of the house to the street to replace the plumbing. $80k (entire grant)

Some of the flowers at the front of the house got squished. She made the city compensate her for them.

Shiet happens. Let it go.
