Recommend a tandem kayak for me and my little boy
We’re not going fishing with it, just paddling on flat water. We borrowed a tandem this past Saturday and didn’t like that particular boat as it kept drifting left (Perception Tribe). I think I want a rudder next time. Any particular brand you’re fond of? I have Wilderness Tarpon single paddler kayaks and love them but their tandem model is big money. I’d like to stay under $800 if possible and 14’ or less.
Thanks! |

I have a 2 person inflatable Kayak, similar to this one , which is 549
https://www.aquaglide.com/product/chinook-120/ It has a detachable rudder, and is perfect for bays, lakes, etc. It inflates in about 10 minutes,, with a 3’” diameter hand pump, and folds down to a carry case that can be backpacked or checked as luggage. It is extremely comfortable and stable, but not as quick as a regular kayak. I took one to Italy, and kayaked Lake Como. |

I’ve not considered inflatables. Thanks, I’ll look into it!

55, its not the boat. I think it might your little boy not being able to peddle evenly causing the boat to turn. A rudder is just one more thing to deal with during transport. YOur job is to make correction as you peddle or see fit. It only takes one pedal stroke to turn the boat, so if correction is needed to get the boat to track straight if veering left, skip one right peddle stroke or give it a gentle dig and it will come right back especially in calm water. Seriously, a rudder is a pain in the ass during transport. Give it another go and see if it make any difference. Even stroke is key. I am sure there are rentals up by the bay.

I bought an inflatable to store under the RV. They’re versatile and easy to store. They do. To perform very well but are great if you just want to get a little further out in the water for some fishing.

We have two so the whole family can go out, Necky Manitou II
I put a rudder on the wife’s so it’s easier for her to steer. You can also move the rear seat forward to make it a single paddler. About 16’ 65lbs

I've been in several kayaks that veer like that. Can't remember which brands. Totally annoying. Maybe ones that don't track straight are good for white water manueverability, but it drives me bonkers. If I ever get anything, it will be a canoe.

That's what I was thinking.
My family goes canoeing almost every weekend. The girls love trying to paddle and steer. Its good for just me, or the family of 4.
