Considering a 9mm

I've been going back and forth between 9mm and .45 for quite some time. I think I've locked on on a 9mm for the magazine capacity and the RIP rounds. A 45 with a double stack just feels heavy.

Glock has an extended 32 round mag but that just seems excessive. Glock and Springfield offer a 19 round which seems about right. I put a Springfield Xd in my hand today and it fit nicely. It's a full size 9 not a compact. I like the feel of the full size pistol better in my hand. A lot of guys talk about Glock having a tendency to jamb, definite negative if true. I like a grip and trigger safety and want something with a rail to add a laser. My nephew has a Glock 9 with a grip laser that's pretty sweet but it feels short in my hand.

Budget for just the weapon is $600 or less. What say the brain trust?

Go to a range/shop that allows you to rent, try many buy what you like best.

Do you plan to carry in the future, that might change what features you will want on the gun.

Glock 19 is hard to beat for a tried true tool

CZ P10C is nice as well

Sig has a nice new 9mm, that the gov seems to like.

I looked at the Glock 19 as well as the P10C but didn't hold them. I've liked the Sigs but those things can get expensive quickly. I saw the length of the grip on the Springfield and said "can I hold that one?". It felt good in my hand. I wasn't sure what mags were available so I had to go home and do more homework. Mostly I'm looking for something comfortable in the hand. I'm not planning to do CC although I will get the CCP. So much to consider when buying!

22LR is my favorite. Works esp well on possums and raccoons. $300 will get you a good rifle.
What are you planning on using it for?

Can't go wrong with a glock.
I go between a glock and Walther ppq on my cc.
I open carry the m9. LOL

We're on the short spoons that fit in the palm of the hand.

That said. I agree. I've been shooting Mostly 22lr lately.

Ha! I got a groundhog at 202 yards with my 22 mag the other day.

Forgot about Walther btw. I looked at those as well. I think it was the lowest priced of the bunch I looked at.

What is it you are buying the gun for? That is important if you need advice aside from general preferences.

Glocks jamming? Haha. They are definitely not "known" for that. They are ugly as sin but not known for reliability issues ...

I have a 22/250 for that. Been playing the "long game" with my 22 mag lately because a farmer doesn't give us anything if we shoot groundhogs on his farm so I don't burn the more expensive round.

Mostly just want one. Possible carry in the future but OH is open carry so the size doesn't really play in. Plus I figure if my nephew can CC a 1911, I should be able to do the same with the 9.

You must have looked at the ccp. Do not recommend those. The PPQ are very nice and around 600ish. The glocks blue pricing is 420ish

Yes, a Glock in 9 mm would fit the bill. How about .40? I would not let magazine capacity drive my decision. Sure, more is better, but is 15 better than 13? Or 13 better than 10? Most self defense situation are cleared with 5 rounds or less.

Open carry is an iffy subject. It is good when out hunting, fishing, camping, on your property but not in public. Here, Jerry has an opinion:



So, what Glock models did you have in mind?

I am a Sig fan - I like metal frames and a hammer / decoker. But I am not a self defense type of shooter. Only carry when hunting and that's usually a revolver.

As others have said, maybe you should pick a caliber and then shoot as many 9s as you can. Don't knock any of the other manufacturers. Everyone makes their version of a Glock now.

Can't really go wrong there.

Though, my current favorite in the Tupperware category is the HK VP9.
Great ergos + ambi mag & slide releases. The older USP models are typically tack-drivers, but they are just a bit on the larger/blockier side.

Newer Sig Tupperware is supposed to be pretty decent as well (P365 XL, etc.).

If you want to step it up a notch: Sig P229 Legion (also available in a SAO version).

I like my P10c, and its big brother the EVO s1. I think I'm going to try to sell my old Glock 21 gen1-2 and see if I can get into a Glock 19. Less ammo variation in my collection that way.

I don't think the VP9 is that bad, price-wise (VP = Volks Pistol). I haven't checked prices lately, but I picked up mine up for $400 (technically used, but it was like new/unfired) a couple years ago.
Glocks are getting pretty `spensive these days too.

I gave .40 some thought but like the 19+1 and the fact that if I get a 9 my friend has the dies to reload.

Yes, that's what I have seen in reviews, some really nice plastic Sig striker fires. The 229 will definitely exceed the budget but more up my alley.

I like going with proven platforms, so the Glock 19 is probably a good buy if you can live with how it looks!

Erroneous. I've never heard such a thing. If you have, don't listen to those people. You'd have to put chewed up bubble gum in your chamber to make a Glock jam. And then it still might not jam. They go bang every time. They're not for everyone, their stock triggers rub me the wrong way, they're fugly. But I'd trust my life to a right out of the box Glock any day of the week. I only have one Glock at the moment and it's a backup to all my other backups. But it's a dead nuts reliable gun.
