Butter Vs Margarine

Eggs are bad for you... no wait... eggs are GOOD for you!

Coffee is bad for you... no wait... coffee is Good for you!

Margarine is good for you... no wait...

And on and on...

And now it is butter, the males in my family have a history of high cholesterol so I have been using margarine most of my adult life, thinking of switching to butter (only use butter/margarine a few times a week if even that. Pretty much only on toast, I cook with extra virgin olive oil or grapeseed oil.)

So, what says PPOT?

I'm firmly in the camp with the "eat what you want, none of us are getting out of here alive" group. So for me it's butter when I'm cooking eggs. Butter on toast

I had high cholesterol (230-265), and my mom and grandmother have high cholesterol as well. I think my dad may have, and took statins, but I'm not sure.

I eat full fat whatever, cheese, butter, etc... My cholesterol is generally in the 165-200 range now. What I changed was my sugar (decreased) and fiber (increased) intake.

cholesterol that you eat (as long as you aren't eating sticks of butter like a candy bar) is not the major source of cholesterol.

Everything these days is full of sugar or something like sugar (corn syrup, dextrose, malto-dextrose, etc...).

I had a check up where my cholesterol was back over 200 (205, I think) and that was a period where I had been eating more sugar.

Correct, cholesterol is about 1/3 what you eat, 2/3 genetics. Most people aren't aware of the numbers.

Oh man I do! That thing looks like a heart attack on a plate but I'll bet it's rich and chocolatey! But then again, I'm the guy that likes the corner piece of cake because it has the most icing!

Butter is good. It’s made from milk. And milk is good. Just don’t have too much of it.

LDL cholesterol levels are a very weak predictor of wellness. Were it not for hugely lucrative statin drugs, which are widely and unnecessarily prescribed to reduce cholesterol, we'd have long since abandoned trying to manage such levels.

In fact, higher LDL cholesterol is generally associated with lower all cause mortality. Google it if you don't believe me. It's proven in multiple studies.

Butter, and particularly grass fed butter, is one of the best fats you can ingest. Indeed, butter is high in butyric acid which is extremely good for gut health and metabolism.

Margarine is hydrogenated vegetable oil (formerly known as machine oil as they were not intended for human consumption). The hydrogenation process creates trans fats. In general, vegetable oils are inflammatory (some less than others) and trans fats are extra inflammatory. Systemic inflammation fuels arterial inflammation and coronary artery disease - - ironically the same conditions that plant oils are marketed to prevent. If you do the research, it's all there - - but the recommendation of many doctor associations (eg, American Heart Assn) fail to address the issue as they are funded by sources including the drug and food industries. It sounds conspiratorial, and it is, but that does not make it false.

Eat real food: meat, eggs, butter, nuts, and green vegetables. Don't worry about saturated fat, there's no strong evidence that it's unhealthy. Limit alcohol consumption, starchy vegetables like potatoes and carrots, and minimize vegetable oils except olive and coconut. Eliminate sugar and grains in all forms (both are hugely inflammatory). You'll lose weight, feel better, improve your health markers, and you wont be hungry.
