Cayenne diesel

Are they worth the difference from a VW?

https://www.euroclassics.porschedealer.com/used/Porsche/2015-Porsche-Cayenne-midlothian-va-f1696c5a0a0e0ae828e8022b5448525d.htm

I test drove this one today and I like it, but it is pricey!

I'd be looking at a Touareg V8 TDI R-Line as well.

This year falls under the vehicles effected by Dieselgate.

Pretty much the same as a Touareg. Maybe a bit nicer interior.

However, VW electrics, they eat tires...

Really enjoy my Cayenne S (gas). Lots of power, creature comforts and corners well. My only knock is mileage sucks. Wish I had bought a diesel. Now you can do it for me, for you and for our country. Do it.

See if they will sell it as a CPO since repairs are really Porsche pricey. The typical annual repair bill for gas Cayennes is $2000. I spent that my first year but am wrapping up year two with only gas, wipers and oil.

The salesman did say it was hard on tires. The interior is nice, but it's about 2x the money of a VW.

The reason I mentioned the V8 TDI R-Line is because a friend had the Cayenne diesel and now owns an R Line. His thoughts are the R Line is streets ahead. Better bang for buck and goes like a scalded cat. And enough torque to pull a locomotive.

I take back the comment about being 2x the money as the VW. The ones I have found searching autotrader and car gurus they are within a few thousand of each other.

You are recommending some Australian market vehicle that does not exist in the United States. This seems to happen a lot here.

I was almost ready to trade my 335d in on the Cayenne yesterday, but chickened out. Today the 335d dash lit up like a damn Christmas tree!

check engine
ABS
DTC
brake

I have exceeded my luck with the BMW!

Its only in the last decade or so that we started getting a lot more diesel powered "cars" (non semi or full size trucks) here. Most of the diesels then and now were VW/Audi stuff.
I had a 1980 VW Rabbit (Golf) Diesel. non turbo. Pitifully slow.

Lots of gas stations didnt have diesel fuel. Almost all of them do now.

On another note, I recently saw a newer Chevy SS driving around that had been re-badged as a Holden. pretty cool

It was a dead mouse! Yes a dead mouse in the right front rotor that caused the lights. Not the check engine, but the rest of them were the mouse.

I have read so much about how bad BMW's are that I crap myself every time a light comes on.

I do still want the Porsche or VW diesel SUV. Maybe in the spring.

Why must you have a diesel?

btw... The E46 and E39 were the last good cars BMW made. My daily is an immaculate E46 wagon.

Diesel cars were just taking off in the U.S. ten years ago and then the VW scandal happened and sort of deep-sixed the whole market segment. That and general emission standards that phased them out. It was a short romance.

No help with your question but, it does look nice. They have come a long way from the original model. Gone is the ugly headlights and triangle steering wheel.

Not sure why I want a diesel. I just like them I guess.

We have the Audi variant. Q7 TDI from 2014.
Right around 90k on the odometer now.
We bought new, and used Audi for maintenance through 45k miles.
Part of dieselgate, and we received the initial payment, a Bosch payment, and then the ‘big’ payout for having it converted to the new software and hardware mods.
It’s been a pretty good vehicle, and maintenance has been reasonable.
I did brakes at <30k miles (we lived in ATL and traffic....)
Did that myself for $600 in parts (F&R pads, rotors, sensors) from Pelican.
Dealer quoted nearly $2k to do the job.
We are on 3rd set of tires and they will get changed out before the snow flies - so yes, they do eat tires. Might have something to do with wife driving it like it’s a nearly 6000# Honda Civic. Physics, and all....
I just completed a change-out of transmission fluid, F&R Diff oil and transfer case oil. Along with an oil change, materials cost me $500. Wife says she can tell that it drives smoother / shifts smoother.
There are occasional things to address:
Drivers’ power window button went flaky about 2 months ago. Replaced it with one that I found online for $40 and about 2 hours worth of dissecting the drivers’ interior door panel.
A/C blower (under the glove box) started flaking out - so I bought a new Sebro unit online (may have been Pelican - don’t recall, to be honest). That took 30 minutes to replace while standing on my head to see/reach it.
We had one period of time that it was throwing a code related to the DPF - and I think Audi ended up re-flashing with a newer version. That was 20k+ miles ago, and I think they have it fixed.
Not entirely thrilled with the Nav system. Audio is fine, but the GPS - frankly - sucks. I think 2014 vintage compared to today is a big difference, regardless of manufacturer.

The torque is great (my wife really likes to put her foot into it), and mileage has been really good (typically mid to high 20’s - with 30mpg attainable on the highway).

I’d like to get my hands on a Q5 with the TDI. I think that (smaller, lighter vehicle) would be a really nice driver.

That’s my $0.02 for today.

I had a 2013 Touareg Diesel, drove it for 75,000 miles. Great car. Same drive train as the Porsche but the Porsche had better creature comforts. Wanted to trade it for the Porsche, but it was during dieselgate and I decided not to wait. I think the Audi, Porsche or the VW would be great. I was active on a Touareg site and there were diesels with 100k to 200k with no issues. Ended up with a Range Rover Sport Diesel. Got 70k on that now.

Love Diesels.

After three diesels (2 VW TDIs, 1 X5d (now my son's)) I had purchased a Panamera Turbo. At best 14 MPG I never meshed with the car. I began hunting a new diesel, I did look at used but again did not find the one for me.

If you were open to used SUVs; $70,000 list 2017 & 2018 BMW X5ds are readily available off lease with under 30,000 miles for $35,000 to $40,000. The 2015 & 2016 Cayennes were a bit cheaper but w/ less equipment and predominately higher miles.

I decided to buy new from very limited offerings and purchased a 2020 Range Rover Diesel ($110ish out the door). So far so good I do need to get the mpg up. My X5d averaged 30 mpg over 100,000 miles. This MPG could be a challenge as this is a bigger vehicle and I drive it in the city much more than the X5.
