What a day - damage to my truck

Today I had to do a Home Depot run to pick up 5/4 decking boards . They were the only store that had any inventory . The shelves were almost bare but then I spotted a full bundle of 10 footers on the high rack .

I got the rest of what I needed and went to the checkout . Pulled my truck into the loading zone and two minutes later a fork lift rounds the corner with my purchase . The forklift operator and the spotter are young pups so I gave suggestions on how to load the stack .

When I was younger I worked in a lumber yard and used forklifts many times to load customer trucks . Anyway the youngin on the forklift says he's got it and did nothing I suggested ☹️ .

It only took about 3 minutes for this clown to snap the plastic bands ........ plastic bands and almost all of the load came crashing down smashing my tailgate . The tailgate was down/horizontal but they only had the load about a foot into the truck . I looked at the kid and said you should have listened to me .

Manager was called and I took pics . Accident report was filled out and I have a copy . I also have the names of the employees and the manager . Looking my truck over after I unloaded at home it looks like a new tailgate and LED light strip above the bumper will fix it.

The worst part of the entire ordeal ......... not one of them apologized . Not one of them. I think I took more pictures than the manager . I guess it's a different world now .

How old is your truck? Tailgates are hard to find. Most junk yards want to sell the tailgates with the bed. I went through that years ago.

Tailgate thefts are a big thing here in So Cal along with catalytic convertors.

On the plus side, you got your wood. Talking to my lumber salesman today, there is a treated lumber shortage.

Yeah my understanding is two major wood treatment plants had issues a few months ago . One was hit hard by Covid19 and the other had a fire causing major back load . What I purchased today should complete my project .

That just sucks.
My son loaned his pickup to his cousin. Cousin dented the gate pretty good. This was on a fairly new truck too. My son let it slide. Pissed me off as I thought he should have held his cousin responsible. Son later replaced the gate on his own. Cost him $1200!
I just don't get the younger generation.
They should have at least apologized.

17 years ago I bought my F250 6.0PSD

Just before I got in to drive away, the salesman told me to keep the tailgate locked.

Learned a little something just then.

He could have just stolen one. Not saying he would but it is a thing in some places. I know in South Florida it happens. I don't know if people sell them for scrap or to others.
I used to have to drive my company p/u to Miami and I was told don't leave on the street too long.

a long time ago, when i was young and stupid, i was running a forklift on a peach grading station. I thought i was a pretty good fork lift driver. One afternoon when we were really busy, i came wheeling around the corner fast and whilst adjusting the fork level to pick up two bins, i hit the brakes to slow down. Unfortunately, my forklift only had brakes on one wheel and that wheel was slightly off the ground as I came around the corner too fast. I punched a nice neat rectangular hole in the side of the farmers truck.

Was the frame damaged? i.e. other side of the hinges

It's a long shot but you could throw a small book if you needed to.
Lost time is usually not recoverable.
Renting another vehicle (to maintain your own business contractual obligations) might be necessary, if that is what is required to "make you whole".

When negotiating/recovering your very real damages caused by dumbfks and their dumbfk mngrs...that might be a small fire/bigger number to grease the wheels of bureaucracy and get it settled.

Entire departments are dedicated to covering up mistakes.

Apologize? That's a thing of the past. I don't even hear it anymore. Like my father would say, poor parenting and that a poor reflection on me. Go and say it like you really mean it.

Oh siht, that all I need to hear.

My mom came up to us for dinner a couple weeks ago. Parked out front around 5 and started the car about 9 to go home. I was thinking who's race car, so loud? Yep they cut out the cat. Its really quiet up here and I should have heard the noise. Bastards.
