Movie discussion...Vast of Night
It's an Amazon movie, and it's nearly unknown. Has anyone seen it? I liked it, but there are some character flaws that made me not love it. However, it was worth the 90 minutes of my life.
60's style sci-fi alien story, think of Close Encounters. It got bad reviews overall, but I think that's because it's not flashy. There are several 5, 6, 7 minute single take camera shots, only about 4 actual locations of interest, and in one case, the scene is 10 minutes looking at the face of the main character working a telephone switchboard...no cuts, no camera motion, no effects, just you and her. It could have been a stage play.

I watched half of it. I think it was well made but really slow. I do like long takes. I might go back and watch the second half.

Maybe it was written as a stage play and they could not get it produced that way.

Not a bad effort everything considered but the ending was predictable.
It felt authentic & I liked it.

I thought it was engrossing. The long shots were mesmerizing, both leads were terrific. First time movie by a commercial videographer who did this passion project on a shoestring.

And yes certainly a passion project. The vintage cars and bike were a nice touch. Even the basketball court looked authentic to the period.

I read they found the basketball court in a small town, then refinished it to period markings (no three point line etc), which cost a lot relative to their budget (his savings mostly) but they wanted it correct and not digitally done.

You mean in basketball? Not sure I get the question. Anyway, I dunno. 1950s high school sports are pretty obscure to me.

Yes the basketball... I only asked because one of the "mothers" in the movie made a comment about how the Indian boys looked like grown me in their uniforms and they were going to get beaten by them.
I'm guessing back then Black players weren't a thing yet. Anyway... Enjoyable movie!
