They need to charge all the people that have to be rescued with teams of people risking their lives to save their butt.

And I bet when he was at the bottom if they had called him and asked if he was willing to pay $1,530 to be rescued he was have not hesitated to agree to that price or even more.

No sympathy for him from me.

i'm thinking he didn't need to be rescued. you think he got hurt? typical news article with a bunch of holes in the story.

i read it like he got cuffed at the bottom of the hill.

I did as well.

I'd pay $1500 to be able to walk up there, just like Hugh!

I'll cut the check ASAP.

Cheap. Hit a guardrail at Watkins Glen and you're paying for that too.

I believe there are a couple trails in Michigan Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes which have since been closed off.
Too many people ignored the signs, got to the bottom of the the trek, and couldn't make the climb back up.
Rescue gets expensive when helicopters are involved.

where would you draw the line?

vehicle crash, where the guy may have missed a red light? charge him? lady with the screaming baby that let her cooking grease get to hot and lit her house on fire? charge her?

or only non-typical high risk behaviors?

if i could do it over again, i wish i could have taken a swing at getting a job with the fire-department. it seems pretty noble and super interesting at the least. it just doesnt seem to work that well, if i had to bring a credit card machine

people do stupid things..i have. one time an ambulance had to come get me and take me to the hospital. i fully appreciated the service..(i think i had to pay $500), but in general, i was so happy they were available.

^^^^^ Yes, people do stupid things, & in some cases should be charged for rescue costs. In our County, peole are always having to be rescued after trying unsafe and prohibited routes down the local cliffs to beaches. Not eight miles or less from there is a place named Three Sster's Falls. Each year people die on the trail or have to be medivaced out. Each year the Forest Service advises people who are not in good physical shape and during hot weather not to go. It's a short day hike but steep & dry. When I talk to Forest Service people, they tell me they are in there almost every day lots of times and the helicopter goes in at least once or twice a week. They even placed a flashing sign on the side of the road after getting off the interstate saying when it's closed, but it doesn't stop the idiots.

Easy, legit wrecks like a car crash at a red light, rescue them, they were not intentionally trying to crash. Notice I said wrecks, virtually all car crashes are driver error and not an accident, just a wreck or crash.

And yea, if one is participating in high risk behavior, they should pay the costs of the rescue. People that refuse to evacuate when a hurricane is bearing down, pay up. Folks in normally safe areas and no evacuation orders, rescue them as possible.

Folks that go mountain climbing and are just stupid and unprepared for conditions or go out in the open ocean in a bass boat, pay up.

rescue charges are a tough call b/c of the concern that many will not call for a rescue if they think they'll be charged

or worse, they will delay calling - and drive up the risk to the rescue party

I don’t know if they closed any trails but the ones I’ve been on have signs saying it takes a healthy person 4 hrs to limb back up.

So less than a minute to go down becomes 1/2 day to get up. Allot of kids used to do it.

Heck my ambulance ride to the cardiac ER cost $6000 and it wasn't like I purposefully had a HA. So yeah pay for your rescue.
