New Toyota 4 Runner

Saw the new Toyota 4 Runner - dang, nice looking truck. Gives the new Bronco some competition in my book. The one I saw was a cool army green w/ blacked out lights and a mild lift.

My wife has a 2020 4Runner.

I have driven it once. I'll have a more lengthy review when my other nut drops and I get to drive it.

Best.

I have a 5 gen, basically the same thing, but the new ones are very nice. I wish there's a bit more low end grunt like a 4wd should have.

My wife has mentioned the same thing. We had a 2003 Sport she drove for 15 years that was very quick throughout acceleration for a SUV. Lighter and more nimble in comparison to the 2020...

The 2020 is very nice, or so I have heard. We did not get the TRD version since the only dirt this thing will see is our farm road.

I think that's Toyota's way of trying to safe fuel to satisfy the MPG regulations. The transmission shifts in a hurry to the highest gear. I can be driving down the road doing 45 mph, but by about 40, its shifted itself in 5 th gear. It doesn't like to down shift much unless the pedal is floored. My indy mechanic re-flash the transmission for me about 6 months ago. Its a factory re-flash but that made a day and night different feel to the way the truck drove. I bet Toyota has this set up all along, and that's way the way it should feel, much snappier.

Yep, I had one but no longer needed after re-flash. Pedal Command is a bit too jumpy. Very sensitive to pedal input.

Any impact on warranty?

I know you wrote "factory" but I want to be sure.

My 2015 Tundra, by comparison, is freaking Secretariat compared to the 2020 4Runner.

I have some reading assignments!

I have a 2019 TRD Off Road with about 6k miles on it. I haven't had any issues with shifting. I have seen 27 mpg on occasion, though...

IMHO, the suspension is too soft. I'm going to address that.

Not saying they are right, but the 2021 4Runner gets ripped by a bunch of reviewers.... C&D, Motor Trend, etc.

My dad and I have owned several 4Runners over the decades, the last being a 2008. They have skyrocketed in price.

I can't touch that kind of mpg going downhill with a hurricane pushing me.

Didn't ask. It has 75,000 on flawless miles on the truck. I don't know, but according to them, it factory. Those guys are indy Toyota mechanics and use to work at the dealer. I am not sure if they will have that for your trucks because its still too new and under warranty. I really think Toyota did that to go around Gov mpg requirements so it can be sold to the public. Years later, they release this so their vehicles can be made to feel "right"?

You also have that big V8 under there. The low down torque is a huge difference. the $ runner must be rev a bit to get it moving

Yeah right. That must have been right after you did a reset and backed it out of the gas station!

I was constantly at 15.2 MPG but I drive mostly freeway and in So Cal you gotta get while the gettin's good. Probably could have gotten 17-18 if I'd have babied it.

Nice trucks, you can find my reviews here on Pelican in some threads. Just didn't do it for me. The MPG/Performance thing is what made me hang it up. My F150 with the 3.5 EB does just fine with better performance at the pump.

The 4Runner front shocks and control arms should be up graded right out of the chute. The "nosedive" on braking with factory sucks.

Here's a "before" lift stance, "after" stance and a gratuitous pic....

The 27 mpg was on my way to Charlotte Motor Speedway last month. Filled up in Knoxville and took this picture somewhere near Charlotte. Probably 150 miles after filling up.

Best I ever got was 21 going to Mew Mexico for a graduation. Cruise control at 75-80. Must be the New Mexican or AZ fuel? I have the Limited so it has the KDDS suspension. It works. handles like a race car on our curvy fwys. Stiff, so no noses dive.

My 2001 3rd gen was fantastic with the TRD supercharger The only downside is it felt like a tin can.

How many miles before you got rid of it? I Just bought one for my oldest kid. He will be of driving age next year so we tore into it. All suspension and fluids. Ball joints are getting replaced tomorrow. Anything I need to look out for? Oh, its a 98 limited, rear with a locker.

I had it for at 4 years and sold it with 50k on it. I got rear ended in my Mercedes and my back couldn't handle the bumpiness while I was recuperating. Overall, it is a very dependable car. Just make sure to change your oil every 3000 miles. Toyotas of that vintage have a sludge problem.

Is your F-150 still stock? My best friend in L.A. has a 3.5 ecoboost,(early one, maybe 2012), bought it new and has 120k miles now. He recently put a cat-back and tune on it and it absolutely transformed the truck! He never loved it the whole time he owned it and now he says that it is very noticeably "snappier" and showing 4 mpg better on the computer in dash.

I'd met guys w tuned ecoboosts over the years and always told him he should do it, now he only regrets that he did not do it years ago or at least the minute the warranty expired.

Just a FYI.

With these tunes, I often wonder how much do they actually shorten the life of the engine?
