Things to see around White Mountains NH
Myself and a bunch of guys are planning a road trip around the white mountains in NH. Planning on Kangamangus Highway and Franconia Notch. Probably stop in North Conway for refreshments.
Going October 3rd and 4th. Anyone know any great places to stop? I am thinking brewery's, sights, rivers, pubs, small villages. We are coming up 93 from MA and maybe take 16 to 95 home. Suggestions? Thanks. |

If there is still a cog train at Mt. Washington, that might be interesting. Hanover, NH is not too far away... wonderful town.
Birthplace of artificial intelligence, Animal House, first diagnostic x-ray ever, BASIC computer language et cetera. Back in the day, Charles Bronson used to hang out from time to time in the Hanover area.

Thanks, I will check out the town. Cool enough for Bronson, cool enough for me.

North Conway is pretty cool by itself with the old-timey steam engine train rides.
They are VERY vigilant regarding parking in the town. Bill K

Been to Conway lots of times. Muddy Moose is the 1st place I got to eat at when the whole Coved thing broke. It will always have a special place in my heart. Love eating out.

There used to be a patio (Dartmouth Inn)on the Dartmouth campus overlooking the square. I spent alot of time there drink.. uh sipping whisky waaaay back in the 70's. Franconia Notch is picturesque as heck but a strenuous hike. Mt Washington is a major hoot.

Lots of interesting stuff on the Dartmouth campus in Hanover. Old school... 1769.
I only visited Mt. Washington one time-- a medical/science conference in 1985 or 1986. Stayed at a conference center and hotel at Bretton Woods. Took a trip up to the top on the train. One of the last trips that year. The top of Mount Washington has the worst weather in the world. See, e.g., https://weather.com/science/weather-explainers/news/mount-washington-new-hampshire-observatory-extreme-weather I also flew a Cessna 172 over Mt. Washington. Briefly as I was not properly trained. I was about 21 years old as was the other pilot. He had tended cabins up there as a teenager, and right before we took off he told me he was first on site at a small plane crash on the mountain years earlier. He described some of what he saw before he went through the checklist. One thing that might be possible and fun if there is time and interest might be a covered bridge tour. I did one back in the day with my first car-- MGB.

Be sure to stop in the gift shop and pick up a "This car climber Mt Washington" sticker.
When we went, it was 73 degrees at the base and 12 degrees at the summit with 55 mph winds.

Bear Notch road between the kanc and Rt 302.
Take a trip up MT. Washington. That will be peak foliage = lots of traffic.

Bear Notch Rd from the Kanc to Bartlett is much fun during non leaf peeping season, sort of like a mini hillclimb.

I have to weary of inclines and speed. Some of the guys have old 70’s trans ams and they complain when I break 70.
Thanks again guys. I’m writing all this down and will put to use. |

I used to live out that way a few years ago - Kangamangus is a fun drive but be careful. NH is loaded with podunk, two-horse towns where the primary revenue source is speeding tickets. As stated Mount Washington Auto Road is worthwhile but don’t underestimate how horrible the weather can be at the summit. Go prepared. It can snow / ice in July.
Personally I love the NH coast - my primary stomping grounds back when. Rye, Portsmouth, North Hampton... all nice. If you’re there post Labor Day then Hampton Beach might even be doable. I would NOT go in the traditional summer months (Memorial Day to Labor Day). It’s an overcrowded zoo during those times and not worth it but post-LD it should be okay. Enjoy!
