And rough riding? Did I mention that? I have 15" rims, not huge but big tires and I run 15 lbs. in them to help. Otherwise it will jar your fillings out of your teeth. Unless they have a modern engine they are good for 55 white knuckle MPH and with power a complete death trap.

At least mine has a roll bar and 3 point belts. That's the min to drive in traffic. Or even get in.

back in my early 20's, a buddy was considering buying a CJ5 (I think that's what it was) with a 327 SBC and asked me to check it out.
it felt real sketchy but had plenty of power, I took it up to about 45 mph going down the street and then I hit the brakes. Oops.
One of the front wheels locked up tight as a drum but the other didn't bother to do anything.
Darn near ripped the wheel out of my hands and it felt like it got on two wheels, I thought for sure I was going over.

I limped back and just said "pass"

Old Jeeps are good for going slow off road. If that is what you will use it for - FUN!

I worked for a farmer who had one. It was better than his old tractors for pulling wagons on the road because the brakes at least had a prayer of stopping two loaded hay wagons from 20 mph. My choice for pulling the wagons on the road was his John Deere 3020 - it had power brakes and would pull the wagons up hills faster than the Jeep.
As hard road transportation it was horrible. It was under powered and road worse than the tractors.

They made all kinds of farm equipment for Jeeps. Monroe made a 3-point hitch and there were plows, mowers, and even grain binders designed to be used behind Jeeps. The Empire company made a tractor out of Jeep parts. They were pretty much all failures.
I guess the point I'm trying to make is a Jeep is a better tractor than transportation vehicle, but it isn't real good at either one.

Ha! I just read this post. Yes, I suppose the seat must have been pretty close. The guy I worked for was a pretty big dude. He. moved the seat far enough right to clear the fender well and moved it back.

1966 CJ 5. Was my second car I bought when I started driving. That thing was a total blast. Cant think of a vehicle I've had more fun in. Had a chance to buy it back a couple years ago ( it pretty much stayed within my circle of friends...) but the wife was having no part of that ��

Iv got a 46 cj2a and a 67 cj5. The 2a has a pretty much original drivetrain just lift tires and lockers. The 67 is all stock with the dauntless v6. Although they are very much the same they are also very much different. The 2a is much more like a tractor. I havnt used it on the road in a long time just around the house for hauling wood mostly but i drove it to high school and had it on the road for about 5 years. If it was stock height and wheels it would be better on the road. Id love a stock one and if my tires ever go bad i might just change it back. The 67 is much more road freindly. The power of the v6 it has no problem doing highway speeds although its a bit scary above 65. I couldnt imagine being without them. My jeep forum is earlycj5.com all the info you will ever need great group. The 2a is definately an in town sort of vehicle but if you dont go very far it can do just about everything

I'd love to have my '78 CJ5 Renegade back. I bought it new while in hs (lawn mowing $, etc.) for half of it...and a three yr payment book . Mine was a 304 V8... I immediately voided the warranty by removing the exhaust/cat. Headers and side pipes.... then buried it in mud bogs. I probably got 5 mpg.... topless for 6 months at a time.... rain was the only thing that removed mud.

Good times! Oh yeah....you could drive on the beaches then.... 70 mph might have been illegal tho'...

They are slow, uncomfortable, not crash worth at all and get crappy fuel economy.

Willys Jeep is the most awesome vehicle ever produced for under 40 MPH travel. X2 for off road.

Lots of responses here that aren't relevant to the CJ2A you asked about. If I had 100 acres I can see having one. If I lived on less than that - I just don't see the point unless you have access to an off-road playground. Even in that case you would probably want one of the other Jeeps mentioned here.

Hey man, I posted a link to the "Nellybelle". Went for under $40k and they made toys and coloring books featuring that iconic beast.

Shoulda, woulda, coulda, that would be a great piece to own although I don't think I'd "womp" it!

I was supposed to see the Jeep this morning but it was sold yesterday. Not surprised. I think I'm going to focus on the Cabriolet instead of something new. Also a great around town car and easy to put a 2.0T motor in it next year if I fall in love with it. Scored some virtually brand new 1985 seats for it so that changes things about it a little.

My dad used an ex-WW2 one for a couple of decades in the 50s and 60s as a towing vehicle in his garage business( it would haul in a 5 ton truck) They would also run around town for parts in it.It would pull cars out of ditches etc in the snow. Eventually sold to a young guy that was going to use it on a trans Sahara expedition.
Back then it wasnt considered unsafe or especially slow ,and anyway my dad had driven one onto a Normandy beach on June 6 1944 so a London Street was comparatively safe

We had one in the shop a few months back for some major work. It is super cool. Not sure I want to drive it around town though. The owner is taking down to his place in San Jose Del Cabo (SP?) and I think it is a far better fit down there.

His particular one (I think you saw our post on FB) was very authentic and we did plenty of research learning about them. Again, super cool, depending on where you live could be perfect or a pain...
