New Family Truckster

Finally at the glorious point where we no longer need a three row family car, so our 2017 Ford Flex Limited Ecoboost will be going up for sale soon. In its place I picked up this:

It’s a 2010 Mercedes E63 AMG with 39k, two enthusiast owners, bone stock, with the P30 Performance Package. This will be my wife’s daily driver. She is absolutely fully in love with it and so am I. We drove a Panamera 4S which was really our first choice but found it to be very numb, not very involving to drive, and not as high quality inside. It also, for the same money, offers much better performance than the Panamera for the same money. I previously had a C63 and loved it, this provides the same performance and 90% of the muscle car attitude with comfy back seats and a big trunk.

Do it! You can get a lot of car for the money. I regret not calling on one a few weeks ago, a C43 that was E55 swapped by a Mercedes master tech. It also had some RENNtech goodies. It had about 100k and was only $7,500.

P30 is great. Now, if it had the ceramic brakes, it would be a real unicorn.

Yes, I have received an abundance of texts about how much she enjoys her routine errands today thanks to her new ride. She is more prone to vehicular monogamy, so this may last longer than my usual.

It’s actually the NA M156, they didn’t go turbo until 2012. I’ve not driven the turbo, apparently they have monster torque down low but less top end and don’t sound as good. Obviously you can tune them for monster HP too.

I think your 4Runner was 3 years and about 60k. Nissan Quest was 4 years and 60k, Flex was 2 years and 30k. She’s already asking me if this will be reliable at high mileage because she doesn’t want to sell it. At least until she can get a Cayman.

Nice car but the monthly fuel bill is going to be crazy unless she only drives very few miles. Looks good in white.

Wow, I was curious, so I did a super quick search for "2010 Mercedes E63 AMG" and the first hit was Carmax. It had 2 with ~75k miles that were about $25k, and one that was $19k with ~110k miles. That seems like a lot of car (performance and luxury) for not much money.

I got 23 MPG at 80+ MPH on my way home. The Flex got about 17 no matter what. So it’s better!

I have a mundane 2011 E350 'sport'. A few irritations, but I'm at 85k, and still love driving it to work. Hard to beat the sound of a Mercedes door closing. Very competent of on the road.

Nice - I like that body style. It seems the most timeless one they came up with recently on the E. If I only had a use for a sendan, or a car in general, I'd have me a nice fast yacht like that.

My bet is on 24 months or less.

That’s great, those new transmissions and other modern enhancements really help highway fuel economy. In town will be a different story, unless you drive like in a funeral procession.

It’s a good looking car, much better than the one before or after it, IMO.

Agreed, I like how they went back to the strong horizontal lines on the W212. The W211 was too swoopy especially inside. As for 24 months, start the clock! But right now I’d have to pry her out of it.

Thought I’d post an update, my wife and I freaking love this thing. The power, the sound, the turn in, the overall comfort and practicality, it’s the entire package. I managed to find a used set of 19” winter wheels and Pilot Alpin winter tires so we are officially set for winter. We totally made the right choice replacing our Flex with this thing.
