H&R or Springfield M1 for $900? Good price

If I could get an H&R or Springfield M1 garand for $900, is that a good price or too good?

That's the going rate for a "Service grade" M1 from the CMP.

Thank you. I saw a picture online of several in a teepee stack. I was curious.

Service Grades are hard to come by at this time.

Buy it if it's in good shape. Rush out and buy PPU 30/06 M2 ball before it drys uo. Serbia is stopping shipments of arms due to possible war with Albania

On an M.1 you have to check out the various parts to see how correct the spoon is...SN to B date..is the first stop.

HR is more desirable... I like the high SN's mid 50's.

Last M1 I acquired was a high SN Gr..eek Spr..ingfield... that is in near nu cond. I need to letter it through CMP..

900 is a bit more than a junker M..1

I don't really need one and don't know anything about them in general or these specific items. Some guy posted a single, partial pic of 3-5 standing up together on faceplant. I messaged him to ask.

It may have been a good deal, but I also don't want to buy junk. That's a lot of money to spend if you're not confident that you can judge the quality of what you're buying.

I'm passing.

The guy posted the photo again. This is all that I've got which is not much to go on.

So, Tabs, how would you grade a never fired Garand made by International Harvester? I got it by entering a DCM match back in the 70's...sent $125, my fingerprints and a form in. Almost forgot about it until got a notice in my mailbox. Cindy went to the Post office. Blurted: "Oh, it's Paul's rifle." She told me the clerk phreaked..."You can't send a rifle by mail!" She pointed to the return address: "United States Army, Dept. of civilian marksmanship"..."They can".

Opening the package, and seeing it was new, never fired, I just closed the box. This one will go to a friend when I croak...

Sorry, no smart phone here...and I doubt the digital point & shoot Evren & Ruki gifted me years ago works now...played with it a bit, got bored, placed it somewhere years ago...probably a mass of corroded battery by now. Somebody told me the Garand was Korean war era vintage. Dunno if that's correct.
Anyway, new...never fired. Guess I lucked out? I'm sure Kevin (the friend) will enjoy having it...

First you should look at all the part on the rifle to ascertain if they are IH and or are correct for an IH M1.. barrel date should coincide with the SN range for year of mfg.. To see that it is not a rebuild..with the standard mix and match parts out of bucket at the arsenal.

I will take it that it is all correct and in xlt cond...lets think $2500..

I hope you will find that to be satisfactory..

Close enough. Thanks Tabs. Kind of ironic...never was much of a collector, but somehow I've accumulated some items that collectors like.

My rifle club has loaner M1's that we can use in our DCM matches on our way to earning our own. I qualified to purchase one from the DCM some 30 years ago and never did it. I had, by then, fired an M1 enough to know I had no real use for one, nor really enjoyed shooting them. I would suggest anyone considering one as a "shooter", Nathan a "collector", see what you can do about shooting one a bit first. Find a friend with one, find a club that will let you use one, whatever - just get some trigger time. They are, no doubt, exceedingly cool relics of age many hold dear. But they are very, very dated in many ways.

Jeff nailed it. Since I was primarily into hunting at the time I got mine, it was no big deal for me to leave it in the box. Already had a couple of decent hunting rifles in calibers for deer (.257 Roberts) and Elk (7mm Rem. Mag.) and couldn't really see hunting with a Garand. I did enter that match with the idea of getting a Garand in mind...only needed to participate in one match when I did it. Rules stated had to be .30 caliber, iron sights. I entered shooting a Winchester 30-30...woefully inadequate, scored low in the pack. but it got me the rifle. Even in that 1970's match, I noticed that the M-14's outnumbered the Garands among the more serious shooters. No idea what's used these days...

AR platform rifles simply dominate High Power competition these days, particularly Service Rifle. When I was shooting those matches, one could not win shooting an AR. They just didn't hold up at 600 yards with their light bullets. Nowadays, one cannot win unless one is shooting some kind of an AR. The faster twists and heavier bullets have tipped the scales in favor of them. Recoil of the M14/M1A platform makes them just enough more difficult to shoot well, especially in the timed and rapid fire, to be a disadvantage.
