The Hillbilly Brigade

How the small town of Molalla, Oregon saved itself.

https://news.yahoo.com/hillbilly-brigade-saved-oregon-town-175040097.html

MOLALLA, Ore. (Reuters) - Nicole West steered her bulldozer through the smoldering forest, pushing logs into the underbrush and away from the wildfires ripping through Oregon's Cascade Mountains. Her border collie, Oink, rode shotgun as West and a volunteer crew raced to clear a fireline.

Behind West, on the front lines of the 136,000-acre Riverside fire, two young men pulled a water tank behind their pickup truck, struggling to douse the flames.

These are the men and women of the "Hillbilly Brigade" - about 1,200 in all who came together this past week to fight the state’s biggest fire in a century. They are credited with saving the mountain hamlet of Molalla, an hour’s drive south of Portland, after its 9,000 residents were forced to evacuate.

My Sister and her husband had to evacuate from Molalla. They evaced to some friends house in Oregon City and then Oregon City went to level 3 evac...get out now! So, they went to another friends home in Washington.
While all this was happening her daughter, in Colorado, got on Facebook and asked for help to rescue the farm animals they had to leave behind. Once again, folks stepped up to help and moved the cattle, geese, and chickens to a safe location.
They are all back home now in Molalla and grateful for all the help the community provided.

I know some of those folks.

Several customers in the "brigade." Good things can come from tragedy.

Knew a girl from Molalla in college, startling blue eyes

There are some people in the tiny town of Winters down here that bought an old fire truck, just in case. Recently saved structures on their own property for sure, probably a lot of their neighbors too.

Those are Americans doing what real Americans do. Banding together and doing what the government can't do, protect the property and families against a overwhelming monster fire.

I can bet they never discussed politics, or anything except "what can I do next to help". They did what no government or politician could.

Job well done!
