Damn, 65 bucks?

For a gal of paint. So they call it their top end paint, but 65 freaking dollars? It was at my local hardware store, Pratt and Lambert. I needed a gal to save my bacon and paint some exterior trim that the workmen scrapped up. I ask about the quart size. Sit down for this one. 38 dollars for a quart of paint. I shouldn't scream next time my painter give me a price. I know, I know, everything has gone up? WTH? Concrete, lumber, all gone up 30%. I am waiting for min wage to hit 15 bucks in this economy. We are going to fooking pay dearly for this mess.

Yikes. Inflation is real. I thought $35 for a gallon was criminal.

I'd bet if you did enough digging, you'd discover that much of the cost involves complying with various and numerous government regulations...

Interior designer spec Ben. Moore Paint for another job we finished some a couple months ago. Painter was screaming when he paid 255.00 for 5 gal pail. He bought 9 to finish the interior. Inflation is creeping in and up.

I have found paint prices to be negotiable. They will usually discount the price if you ***** about it.

I use Sherwin-Williams (high $ stuff), and have an account there. It's been a while, but the discount is substantial (mebbe 30%?)... and it is still pricey.

Because they can...

If you think that is expensive don't even consider getting your car painted. It can be several hundred dollars per gallon depending on the brand, color, type, etc. In 1999 the PPG Guards Red paint for my 912 restoration was $55/gallon. A few years later, the same PPG paint but this time in Petrol Blue was over $100/gallon, of course that was a metallic so there was some added cost. That was for the 78 911SC restoration.

VOCs are very expensive in kalifornia, thanks .
When you give a group SCAQMD the authority to write the laws, enforce the laws, and keep all fines and fees it collects, abuse is the only logical outcome.

A while ago I posted about trying to buy local. Neighborhood paint store wanted almost $400 for a five gallon Sikkens stain I use on my house. On line was $100 cheaper. Local paint store would not negotiate. I received the five gallon stain in four days of ordering and saved $100.

I had my house painted several years back. The painting contractor said he used to offer a 7 year warranty, but the low VOC paint in California just doesn't last that long anymore so he only offers a 2 year warranty now.
IIRC he was using Sherwin Williams paint which is not cheep by any stretch.

On a side note:
Last time I needed to buy a water heater, I found that natural gas water heater in arid-zona was about $150 cheaper than in California.
But the one in kalifornia is "certified low nox" by the aqmd. IOW they get paid a licensing fee for every one sold.

That was contractor's discounted price unless I was buying 50 gal. Maybe I will save another 3 bucks

Love project farm vids.

I bought 45$ paint instead of the usual 19$ to do our 1/2 bath recently. I actually think it went on a bit better and turned out a bit nicer that the cheap stuff I usually buy. Maybe placebo though.

Don't get me started with the water heater crap. Out right rape because they can like you said. Made laws to leech people dry. YOU see the hike in fees when homes are exchanged?

Glad I don't live in CA.

I've bought a lot of paint and never needed to spend more than about $35.

You should have had it mixed in a lesser grade.
