My dad got me the I am Third book in an attempt to trick me into reading. It worked. I was too young to have seen him play but I loved the book.

I watched him play live on TV and in his prime against my "home team" (Packers), but cannot remember specifics as I was too young. I do remember feeling sad about his injury and his struggles to play at a high level afterward.
I also remember reading his book and the watching the movie "Brian's Song" as a schoolboy and how sad yet inspiring it was. When I moved to California, one of my colleagues was a granddaughter of Halas, and if I recall correctly we had a brief conversation early on about Sayers and Walter Payton as well as other Bears greats. Years later I got to meet Walter Payton when he was part owner of an Indy Car team. The event was at Laguna Seca and I was hanging out a bit with the team. He had an NFL football in his hand a lot that day. Very, very nice man, passionate about motorsport. RIP Gale Sayers.

Wikipedia lists cause of death as "dementia"...I'm wondering if it was CTE. He was 6 months older than me when he died. Makes me realize how lucky I am...
