Friend of mine has a smart watch and it can tell him the length of waves he rode on a particular surf session. It comes out to miles, which I thought was pretty cool.

Some of my watches show the tides which would come in handy but OTOH I can look at my tidal calendar or the Internet just as easy so what's the point?

I have a couple of other nice watches that I no longer wear because I never go anywhere except dialysis 3 times a week.
I have a Submariner that I’ll give to my son when he graduates from college one of these years, I have a really cool numbered Visconti my wife bought me a couple of years ago because I was admiring it at the jewelers but they wantEd $10k for it and my wife found it at a jewelers in Italy for $4k and had it shipped in.
I have a couple of Movados and some other inexpensive watches and a couple of months ago she bought me the new Apple Watch for my bday. It’s actually pretty cool because it can make and receive calls and you don’t need to carry your phone for that.

All together I think I have about 20 watches that I collected over the years. The majority of them are in a watch case but the three more expensive ones sleep in a 6 watch case that keeps them wound. My wife has two watches in it also.

I had a watch fetish that got worse the more money I made over the years but now that I’m retired and don’t go anywhere. I have no use for them anymore other than to just take them out occasionally and admire them. I won’t ever sell them though, they all wind up going to my son when I’m gone.

MMiller. The Pam 312 is an awesome watch also. It looks almost indentical to mine other then mine didn’t come with a rubber band just a brown and a black leather band. I use the brown band because I think it goes better with jeans.

Here’s my Visconti watch my wife bought me for my bday 4 or 5 years ago and the Visconti pen she got me the following year.
The pen sits in its case on my desk and gets way more use than the watch does nowadays.

Tabs, does it look similar to this one? These are super cool, solar powered and only require a tiny bit of light to power them, and they’re radio controlled to automatically update to world time.
They also have a number of other cool features. Other than the little lcd screens they look similar to a Breitling to me. On eBay the titanium ones are about $500-$600 used.
Not a bad choice. I’d rock one

My wife got me an Apple Watch 5 for Father’s Day. Was quite enamored with it initially. Wearing it now as I type this. It’s handy being able to make a call from my wrist when walking the dogs or hands otherwise full. Nice also to check heart rate or even ECG any time. But... no soul whatsoever.

Finding I now wear it when walking early mornings than switch to one of my mechanical watches during the day. I suspect the Apple Watch will eventually be given to one of my kids.

I have a Visconti pen, but had no idea they made watches.

Citizen Titanium eco drive here too. Love the fact that it auto updates time and DST changes in fall and spring. Just don't let it run out of juice or it is a biotch (at least for me) to reset,
Wear a Momentum with nylon band for the most part. Several others in the drawer including a Timex IndiGlo for deep bush adventures where stuff can get trashed fast.
My cardio guy suggested a fitbit style watch but that's not happening as long as I have fingers, a wrist and a watch with a second hand.

Too bad your watch doesn't actually tell accurate time.
Maybe try winding it?

craigster59 09-27-2020 12:12 PM

I prefer analog. I can hardly stand carrying a cellphone much less have that leash on my wrist.

Everyday is a Seiko....

This is what I have for a Citizen Titanium.....

My wife does love her apple watch though. Only feature it has that I really like, in a grand bit of irony, is the find my phone chime

more like every other day. But yes, I've wondered the same thing. My guess is that like most things, the battery will eventually need to be charged daily. I'm not sure what I'll do when this one is dead. Like you, I don't want to have to replace a watch every 3-5 years. But I do love it and it is useful.

Bunch of watches, mostly vintage, mostly dive and mostly automatic. Also a Panerai, Breitling and bunch of Seikos. My daily is a Seiko PADI Solar very similar to Craigster's. That or a black face Seiko "monster". Favorite is a Seiko "MACV-SOG" . A spooky little vintage watch from the Viet Nam era favored by guys who were NOT doing clandestine stuff a in Laos and Cambodia. ;)

One thing I thought of doing was mounting a mechanical watch and an Apple Watch on the same band, so mech on top of wrist and Apple Watch on bottom or side of wrist.

I only wear an Apple Watch. I won it in a sales contest at work. I can’t justify buying a cool analog watch like the ones in this thread when I got the Apple for free. The thing isn’t cheap.

ramonesfreak 09-28-2020 01:18 PM

no. my apple watch sits on my desk. i always wear my Tudor automatic. if i want information more than time, i can refer to my iphone. i knew this before i bought the apple watch but i bought it anyway. i regret that

I almost got a Breitling, but changed my mind. It was a manual wind. If it had been automatic, then I might have it. Although, I'm glad that I didn't spend the money.

I think we need pics of the vintage watch from Vietnam.

That's an interesting though. I've adjusted to wearing the Apple on the right and the mechanical on the left. It doesn't even seem weird any more.

I keep my phone set to silent (vibrate). The watch is also silent (vibrate), but since it's on my wrist, I get the vibrate that I feel 99% of the time if a text, call, etc... comes in. It's also nice and VERY easy to glance down to see the day, month, date, temperature and that other thing, oh yeah, the time. Although I do usually use the mechanical watch for the time.

pksystems 09-28-2020 01:49 PM

You guys still wear watches? Do you have a flip phone too? :)
