Did you ever read...
This thread:
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/off-topic-discussions/1074510-trying-remember-book-title.html got me thinking about books I read as a kid in grade school. I know, you're thinking it must be hard for an old guy like me to even remember grade school, and you're right, it is. The book, or rather series of books, was about a race car mechanic who worked on a car that was driven in the Mexican Panamerican road races. I wish I could remember the name of one of the books or find the series as it was instrumental in getting me to read and sparked my interest in international road racing. Any of you guys ever read a book like that? This would have been read in the early '60's as that is when I was in grade school. |

I bought this off of eBay last winter to read for old time's sake. I remember reading this and "Hot Rod" as a pre-teen. They were influential in a way I guess, since I still remember them 60 years later. |
In seventh grade in the late sixties, I found Outlines of Roman History in the school library.
I read it and instantly fell in love with history in general and Roman history in particular. Many years after that (but still a long time ago) I found a copy at a used book store and had to pick it up. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1601572744.JPG At the same time I was reading all Jules Verne. Dr Ox's Experiment was a favorite. It also kindled a love of SiFi. So much so that I have about 700 SiFi books in boxes in the basement. I probably should pull some of them out and start rereading. One of my favorite authors was Cordwainer Smith. If you like weird and wonderful SiFi and have never heard of him, check him out. Strange universes on par with Frank Herbert. |

This thread instantly brought me back to 6/7th grade where I discovered the library had 'car' books. The one I read again and again titled simply "Hot Rod". Main character was named "Bud" which lived in a small rural town. Wore the pages out.

I looked up my old school. Sent an email to the person listed as the librarian. Told them what I was looking for. They had no info on it as that edition is too out of date. Yeah, the pages probably fell apart since the parchment it was printed on was so old.

in addition to the hotrod books
I remember one about a guy with an old f-1 cooper running the dirt 1/2mile sprint car tracks and an other about two kids with VW drag racing for cash they had a 911s motor in that bug |
