Bad news from the garage

My 06 Taco has rust perforations in the frame! The cutoff for Toyota to honor the recall was 150K miles and I'm over 200. So hanging onto it doesn't make sense but selling it like this is a lose-lose. Sigh, what to do.

Every time I read about frame rust thru I think about the time I was in Denver. The buddy I was staying with got a call from his girlfriend saying her car had had a problem and she needed some help. Since it was dark, raining and cold, we jumped into action right away. When we got to her location, her car was sitting kind of catty wampous. It was her dad's old '65 Chevy impala. This was back in the '90's.
We discovered that the frame had rusted thru at the hump that goes over the rear axle and collapsed.
I was kind of dumb founded at the time by it, as, having grown up in California, I'd never had to deal with RUST of much consequence. To rust out a frame on a Chevy was almost beyond comprehension. Those things are THICK.
Good luck with your truck.
Out here those things are still running around pretty strong I think.

I've been there. Those guys wouldn't take it unless you can see the ground looking thru the cab floor.

Well, a 2006 with 200K can't be worth much, for whatever that's worth. Does it have to be fixed? There's a guy in Arkansas that will fix it for free...

Hey Steve... He has to get it here first.......

If you want to keep it Tom, we can bolt some gussets in . You should do fluid film prevention up there in the land of salt.

I've got fluid film prevention in my pants. Do they offer it on Tacomas?

Welcome to the club.
Had to retire my 03 Tacoma 2 years ago.
Planned on driving this till the wheels fell off.....alas the frame fell off first.

Or sell it to Kontac, Cabman, or WD. they will drive anything in Ohio! I hear those things still bring good money , even rusted, and will frequently go out of the country . Sell it on Ebay!

Is that a Tacoma frame behind the pile of rust?

Ever driven a 914? Depending on the cost, I would say cure the rust and weld in reinforcements and continue to enjoy it. Good luck

Spoke to Toyota and they won't honor the recall past 150K and I have 205. I can probably get another winter out of it but there are some gnarly spots on the frame. Two spots where I can stick a finger through, and it's flaking on all four sides of the box.

No way I'd sell this to anyone without full disclosure and I don't see anyone offering more than $1K in any case. I though of welding in gussets but some of the spots are near joints.

14 years is a good run and I can afford(ish) a newer one, and like Swartzy said I do have my blessings. Now do I need another truck? No but I want one, cars and I are not a good fit.

Fugit, it's only money.

I welded mine several different times and got a few more years out of it but it got to the point were there was no good metal left to weld to. The last patch i welded in i had to weld to the shock mount as it was the only structural thing left.

When I was in the Chicago area I remember lots of 2 and three year old cars just eaten up by the salt monster. It was scary. Rust was pouring out of door handles and it was something that made leasing a car make sense.

My old 1986 El Camino has surface rust on the frame but that is normal. It is still very solid, but we don't have the salt like up north, and the infamous Toyota frame rust issue.
