What type of engine did this piston come from?

At a car show a month ago I won a trophy for 2nd place with my 911. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1601649685.jpg I was just curious, what did this come out of. It is obvious it is a well used piston. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1601649831.jpg In the center of the piston is stamped a 6 or 9, but unless it is from a HUGE 10 cylinder engine I suspect it is a 6. The other marking looks like it is an H. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1601649851.jpg You can see it is big piston, just fraction under 3 & 7/8th inch. If it matters I can use my calipers on it if they go that big and get a more accurate size. I feel certain it is not a Porsche piston, and I honestly don't really care much, but I was just curious if the brain trust had a idea as to what it likely is from. Ford, Chevy, Mopar, or some industrial engine. I suspect it is the trash from some local engine re-builder. I do know my wife is not real happy with it in the house as another thing to dust, so I suspect it will go to my garage to be on display for a while, and then to the attic or back to the car show folks as a donation to the next car show. I have an attic of trophies from Autocrosses and not many car show trophies. Usually a Red Cabriolet or some flashy Turbo with a big wing and wheels win the popular voting. This was not a judged car show, just the people in attendance voting for their favorite of each category. With almost 300 cars there it was a lot to look at. I enjoyed looking at the other cars as much as talking to people about mine. It was a fun day. |
I didn't sleep in a Motel 6 last night...but that piston reminds me of small block chevy flat top pistons that have four cutouts for the valve relief - this this one courtesy summit racing (obviously this one is aftermarket).

It's machined with reliefs for 4 valve per cyl

I was guessing small block Chevy mostly because there are so many of them due to price. I have never seen a Chevy hot rod with a Ford engine in it. I bet more 32 Ford hot rods have Chevy engines than Ford engines.

Yes ^^^^based on the picture looks like a true flat-top cast which would be early higher compression or replacement aftermarket

So if the average 454 has a 4.250 inch bore is this from a 350?

Turns out they do make chebby small block pistons with 4 valve reliefs, for peoples not smart enuff to build engines the right way.

Chevrolet 292 inline 6 ? Thats my guess . The rod looks different than a small block

It does make sense to make a piston that just one part will work on either side of a small block. Just one part to make and package and it works in any cylinder of the engine. No wonder the SBC is so cheap.
Of course if ya wanna, just "while yer in there", just change some parts out and spend as much as you can afford to for more HP. |

The do offset about 1/8"ish.
Pic shows caliper and gap on the long side after measuring the shorter side. There's an arrow with "front" on mine, so on one side the arrow is on top and the other side it's on the bottom. Some have a notch on the edge that faces front. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1601690654.JPG |
The piston in the OP has an odd shape to the casting below the wrist pin. Never seen that in a small block Chevy.
