I've taken it 2 or 3 times in the past, a long time ago. Once or twice, I was able to have 2 browsers up, one with the video/course and another that I used to occupy my time while the video was playing (or while waiting for the timer to countdown while I was "reading" the material). Then I took the same course a few years later. If you shifted the focus from your primary browser window, the timer stopped. THAT was horrible. Fortunately, if I got stuck in the same thing today, I'd just whip out the old iPad...

the last time or two that I got a ticket, I went the route of deferred adjudication/disposition. After 90 days, the issue went away as if it had never happened. In the past, if you took the defensive driving, you ended up with a ticket on your license, that showed no points. I prefer to have no ticket show up at all.

In most of europe you get to go to a real class, take time off work
& show up class.

And they charge you for it

You can go to a real class here too, but online is also an option. You pay whether you go to class or you do it online. Either way, you're stuck having to participate in a class that lasts at least X long (depending upon what state you're in) (6 hours in TX, I think). There are usually options for night or weekend classes.

The physics discussed is a bit distorted.

This course checks you are paying attention & making sure the person taking the course is the same, by recording a survey. You are then asked random questions about the survey every once in a while. The system fails quite a bit.

I took the online course "I drive safely" which took in total about 4 hours or so. I got an additional 10% discount on my auto insurance. My wife still needs to take the course as well.

After 8 & 1/2 hours, I finished. The "clock" showed 6.5 hours. There were quite a few "dead" times where a clock had to wind down. I hope I don't have to do that anytime soon...

James - still better than a citation and a (hefty) fine? I was almost in the same boat as you when I was pulled over for no front plate and failing to use my signal but was able to further discuss it with the DA and dismiss it.

Well, the costs were about comparable. You are paying a "fee" instead of a fine to the court. And then the cost of the on-line program plus the rest of the mess to get the court the documents you need, all in is around $300, plus almost 8 hours of time!

Honestly, the only difference in the "outcome" is no points/record on my license. And that would lead to higher insurance costs, etc. In fact, the stupid course I just did will save about 10% on my car insurance.
