I have no idea what the experts say, but I would have been inclined to pick up one of those many hand size rocks, and started pitching. Of course than I would have to put down the cell phone.
And why go for a hike alone? I guess he does not have a single buddy to use the buddy method of hiking. I bet that was a 6 minute long adrenaline rush.

He wasn't hiking, he was going for a jog, presumably someplace that he regularly goes for a jog.
