I guess not everyone is a great mechanic
So I just looked at a Miata. The ad mentioned the alternator was going out as the belt squeaked.
I looked at the car and mentioned that a tensioner or fresh belt would probably take care of this. Guy emails me that a shot of WD40 made it all better... W T F??? I guess that means I can offer 2000 less now? |

WD40 works well on squeeking brakes, but for the lasting effect, use axle grease.

If WD-40 softens the rubber the slip factor might be negligible. Just a possible explanation.
Turn or do not turn. There is no maybe.

our tahoe has a squeeky belt too. Even with a new belt and shimming up the ac to get more tension on the tensioner it came back. tried cleaning them all with sandpaper and wire brushed cleaned with brake cleaner and even tried belt dressing. Same with my neighbors 88 f-150 he had the squeek for years it had bad water pump but we changed it and the belt but the squeak came back. Hard to tell where its coming from but i think the pulleys get worn down and cant deal with it anymore. I see it alot on V belts on lawnmowers so its not out of the question

The WD will cure the alternator squeak. It will also "cure" the water pump squeak. I see a long walk and a head gasket in the lads future.

We had a belt break and when we replaced it we had to shim the idler pulley out on the shaft some, not for tension. Don't know why, but it stopped the squeak.

My neighbor has a mid-2000 Cheap Jerokee that his late brother bought at an auction and "fixed". To say it runs like crap would be charitable. He asked me what I thought was wrong with it, and I asked if he'd pulled the codes or even done a compression test. His answer "I don't need any of that b*llsh* - I think it just needs cleaning." And then - I 5hit you not - he spent the next hour hosing off the engine.
