Because Pennsylvania is a bit in the news today, not sure why

I have a dumb question. Long ago and far away, my wife and I were touring through Pennsylvania (Quaker state)and we stopped at a small bar where we had a few beers
and they( the beers) were the best ever. Never was much of a beer drinker, but this stuff was very good so my question.... Genesee something, something, beer? Never had better before or since. Ever hear of it. Perhaps it was local corner pub stuff, but good.

Our beer up here in Canada at that time, (1970 about) you drank Moose or Alpine or Schooner beer. Never caught on with me.

Just wondering. BTW we were touring in my wife's new Mini, back then, $2750.00 would get you a new Mini, and I had one also.

Thanks for looking! PS Probably my first time across the US border, so everything was new and exciting back then.

yes, and Genesee is very good beer

immigrants brought good beer making skills with them, and there were several good beer brands in various parts of Penn. even after the big majors killed off most of the smaller brands

I forget the brand but one tasted of green apple when I lived in Penn. in the 1980s

When in that part of the country I usually drink Yuengling.

Can't help you with the name of the other stuff.

Yuengling is available further and further south. I can get it in Arkansas. Normally this time of the year we are in Arkansas driving some really great roads and I have a Yuengling chilled and ready at the motel.

Genessee Cream ale, in a green can! I think it was a cheap beer, I remember drinking them in the woods before I was old enough , probably horked from one of our parents .
Please do not equate the whole state with Philly . We are chill out this way
R Webb, where abouts did you live in Pa?
My Jr high school German teacher's name was Randy Webb. Herr Webb we called him. Cool guy .

Genny cream ale was , in our humble opinion back in the day an exotic beer.

I just remember the dumbest laws ever in PA for buying beer. I was in Hershey, and stopped at a gas station and saw no beer at all. So I asked the chick at the register where a guy can buy some beer. She said I had to go to a beer store. She gave me the directions and I walk into a store the size of a Home Depot, and they had some beer. So I walk to the counter with a 6 pack and he says no can do, I HAVE to buy a cars of beer. OK, no problem I have a week to drink it.

Nothing more fun than walking 1/4 mile through the lobby and down halls toting a case of beer. Lots of my friends said they would be right there to help with the beer disposal.

Fred, I worked at PSU - couldn't stand living in the East, so bailed.

My Webb grandfather was in Texas, and his ancestors were up in the Appalachians, before that. The other 3 all start with Mc ... so Scots-Irish (Or Scotch-Irish when drinking). No German that I know of, but a French woman told me I looked German - took it as a compliment since she was from Alsace-Lorraine.

Fastfred you nailed it! Genesee Cream Ale that's it. Brings back some good memories,

Is it still OK to use Quaker state for PA? Or is that offensive somehow?

I used to keep the little green bottles in the spare tire compartment in my 280Z...Fun Fact; in 10* weather, even beer freezes !

EDIT; Oh wait, that was Little Kings cream ale !

RWebb 11-06-2020 01:59 PM

to getting stoned?

might make you want to drink some hemlock

Sigh. You kids are killin' me.

Genesee Cream Ale in 16 oz returnable bottles from Marchibroda (Ted was in that family) Beverage, Franklin PA. Had to buy a case. 1975. Only 19? No ID? No problem. You gots $13?

Read me lots of Car and Driver and Road & Track buzzed on Cream Ale.

dafischer 11-06-2020 07:10 PM

Genesee Cream Ale gives you the Genesee Cream Puffs. That was one of the beers of choice for the tap system in my fraternity at Lehigh U. in the mid 70's. Can't even look at one now.

That would be the MF Keystone State, Dawg!

dafischer 11-06-2020 07:14 PM

It's also a New York beer, not Pennsylvania.

Yep. Rochester.

Back in my yute 😁 growing up in upstate NY we drank anything we could get our hands on . But Genesee ( red/white can ) or Genny Cream Ale ( green can ) were relatively cheap . I vaguely remember one party we had in the woods where we were drinking the cream ale along with Boone's Farm apple wine .

The projectile vomit this cocktail mix fueled was quite impressive , it burned your throat/mouth/lips like no other . But it never stopped us it was a bizarre right of passage 😊 .

vonsmog 11-07-2020 04:21 AM

Cream Ale, we call it Scream Ale, because you will have the runs if you drink enough of it! Made from horse piss. I don't think anyone here in Rochester drinks it!
