Hi Look,

It’s very simple in concept the router bit is just a point, maybe 60 degrees. There is a plastic bushing which starts out at the diameter of the dowel and then just past where the bit enters the bushing it is threaded, so as you turn the dowel in the bushing, the bit starts cutting the thread groove which then enters the threaded portion to properly space the threads.

They make several sizes 1/2”, 3/4”, 1”, 1 1/4” and 1 1/2”. I need to get the big ones out someday to make an adjustable stool or two.

Its hand feed? What if you screw up the feed rate, then the rod is ruined?

Nope, feed rate doesn’t matter too much, the thread spacing is determined by being threaded into the bushing, so you can stop and it won’t mess up the threads. Different than how threads are cut on a metal lathe where the turning and movement of cutter are in concert.

Oh, yes it is hand fed, they supply plans to make a hand crank to make the turning easier

That dowel threader is neat.

How do you make a matching nut?

The kit comes with a wood tap to correspond with each thread size and they also have a jig to index six sided nuts as well!

Here are the nut crackers- not my design, John Economaki of Bridge City Tool Works is the designer. In the picture below is one of his on the top, one I made in the middle and on the bottom, one in progress. Mine are too thin on the bottom and don’t look as good as his- my turning skill needs more work so I don’t need to sand as much!

FYI, he had published the instructions on a blog for people to make for personal use.

I was curious, so I checked CL for sawstops and also other TS. I found a Sawstop for sale in Houston, 4 years old, Contractor's model, 52", optional rolling base, optional cast iron wings and a spare stop module all for the bargain basement price of $2500. Of course, if you go to the sawstop website and build the same thing, you come out at $2547. Presumably, that one doesn't have 4 years of use, but you do save $47 and probably sales tax on the used one!

Funny comment that he makes - "This would be easier if I had the right router bit...". His missing router bit is probably lying on a counter somewhere next to his safety glasses.

That is some beautiful work coming from a carpenter, not necessarily a cabinet maker. Although I do make some cabinets averaging a cabinet project about every other year.

A couple of tables I made recently. The dining table top is pine I milled into 1x12s on the Timber King. 4'x9' for a ping pong top to drop on top. Full length splines to keep it flat. 8 rubbings of Tung oil. The ladder backed chairs are not my doing.
The coffee table 2" slab is from a big cypress also milled on the band mill. 2'x5' with a 4 foot wide drawer. Blanket shelf is poplar Kreg jigged together. Legs are 1x maple laminated. Bronze paint and watered down forest green on top. Rub through on the corners. It's satisfying to drop a problem tree and make something useful out of it.

Pecky Cedar I harvested locally to my mountain cabin. Walls and ceilings all milled on site. Finished with shiny shellac old school knotty pine style
