Happy Evacuation Day

Most people will have no idea what you are talking about if you say that to them

There’s also an Evacuation Day (Boston). It’s still an official holiday. It is also March 17, so the Irish getting St. Patrick’s Day off may be more a happy historical coincidence than a true remembrance.

Here’s a nice article on Evacuation Day New York that was on Realclearhistory.com today if you prefer reading to watching Tobra’s video. https://earlyamericanists.com/2014/11/25/the-story-of-evacuation-day/ It is a forgotten holiday now, but according to the article it was widely celebrated well into the 1800s. I hadn’t heard of it either until I came across the article.

Many people have no idea what you are talking about, even when you say anything.

Interesting.

As a kid in school I hated history, to the kid version of me what happened long ago was just boring. Now that I am am an old historical artifact I find history fascinating.

I had never heard of Evacuation day. I can understand that after the world wars and fighting with the British to defeat the Germans it was less of a celebration. However the Fourth of July has never been ignored. I don't doubt more than a few feathers were ruffled during WW1 and WW2 when the Americans celebrated the 4th among the British troops.

Thanks for this post, never heard of Evacuation Day!

We need to be reminded of our still being forged nation.

Your observation seems correct. The article I posted said that this is why the holiday fell out of favor. By the end of the 19th Century those who had lived through the British occupation had passed away and by WWI it had become a bit uncomfortable to celebrate a victory over our closest international partner.
