I had always heard that it was better than rack and pinion, but rack and pinion was cheaper to make, so we got rack and pinion. Basically, marketing.

BMW produced rack and pinion in the 1930's

Better is a broad term. If it was better the Porsche 911 would surely have it.

Yes, it is more cost effective but lighter.

My e28 535i has recerc, works well, they can vary the pitch on recerc ball to allow slower reaction near centre or dead straight, so there are some advantages.
