I had always heard that it was better than rack and pinion, but rack and pinion was cheaper to make, so we got rack and pinion. Basically, marketing.

Better is a broad term. If it was better the Porsche 911 would surely have it. Yes, it is more cost effective but lighter. https://www.caranddriver.com/research/a31267607/rack-and-pinion-steering/

Not sure what you are asking?
My e28 535i has recerc, works well, they can vary the pitch on recerc ball to allow slower reaction near centre or dead straight, so there are some advantages.
