Geog. Trivia Question

If you already know the answer to this from earlier..or heard it on NBC morning news yesterday...Please give someone else the chance to guess.

Q: Of the 50 US states, which one is located the farthest west and which one is located the farthest east?

Might be too easy of a question....it surprised me when I heard it on the news Monday.

Sooner or later 11-24-2020 10:09 AM

Farthest north fits in there somewhere.

stevej37 11-24-2020 10:10 AM

No hints....yet!

A930Rocket 11-24-2020 10:12 AM

Far East: South Carolina- Folly Beach to be exact.

At least that’s what they say...

Bzzzt....need both

stevej37 11-24-2020 10:15 AM

I'm sure Alex knew....rip.

stevej37 11-24-2020 10:19 AM

On a side note...I see that Ken Jennings has been picked to fill in on Jeopardy until a permanent host is found. My guess is that he will be liked enough to stay.

The Aleutian islands in Alaska reach almost to Russia. So I bet they go further west than the main islands of Hawaii, but some of Hawaii's islands reach almost to Midway Island.

SC can't be the furthest east. Cape cod sticks out east pretty far. But I would have to guess Maine.

And no I have not used the internet to look it up.

stevej37 11-24-2020 10:23 AM

^^^ So your answers are?

Look closely at the Aleutians for a technical answer.

masraum 11-24-2020 10:25 AM

Alaska farthest west (just this side of international date line)
Hawaii farstest east (other side of international date line)

Or maybe I have them reversed, but that's my guess without looking at other answers or googling.

stevej37 11-24-2020 10:26 AM

^^^ Nope

stevej37 11-24-2020 10:27 AM

No more hints!

Sooner or later 11-24-2020 10:28 AM

I'll shut up.

stevej37 11-24-2020 10:28 AM

If they are going to be mad at me for the answer...might as well be worth it:D

Longitude determines east west. The British determined the world states in Greenwich, England so that is 0 degrees Lon. The Equator is 0 lat. The date line has nothing to do with the east west longitude.

You don't have maps of the USA in SC?

State of Maine sees the sun come up first.

mattdavis11 11-24-2020 10:40 AM

I don't know the answer, but it would seem to me that since the earth is on an axis and rotates, it changes. My guess is Alaska and Hawaii and Florida and Maine. My guess is based on the prime meridian.

stevej37 11-24-2020 10:42 AM

^^^No...the answer is given on the basis of a map.
You are on the right track though

MBAtarga 11-24-2020 10:43 AM

You guys are talking like the earth is round. How silly!

What's your answer for the questions?

gregpark 11-24-2020 10:46 AM

What does Delaware? I dunno, ALASKA!

stevej37 11-24-2020 10:48 AM

I shoulda mentioned at the beginning.....no profane pm's after I give the answer.

(someone will get it before then)

stevej37 11-24-2020 10:54 AM

Have a white-out here this afternoon.
2-3 inches of new stuff.

The Intl date line is roughly 180*, the spot between -179 and +179 (granted, it zig zags around various islands for political reasons). So, if you had something at -179.9, that would be the farthest East and +179.9 would be the farthest West.

The Prime Meridian is 0*. I've never heard of a name for 180* other than that it's roughly equivalent to the Intl Date Line.

Quote:

The International Date Line is located halfway around the world from the prime meridian (0° longitude) or about 180° east (or west) of Greenwich, London, UK, the reference point of time zones. It is also known as the line of demarcation.
The Dateline Is Not Straight

The dateline runs from the North Pole to the South Pole and marks the divide between the Western and Eastern Hemisphere. It is not straight but zigzags to avoid political and country borders and to not cut some countries in half.

masraum 11-24-2020 10:57 AM

Quote:

The 180 degrees longitude line is known as the International Date Line. It is also called the anti-meridian and the 180th meridian. It is both 180 degrees east and 180 degrees west of the Prime Meridian.

According World Atlas, the International Date Line separates two consecutive calendar days. Although the International Date Line runs primarily on the 180 degrees longitude line, it veers away from the exact longitude line in parts of the Pacific Ocean. Changes to the official line are due to requests of countries or islands that are located in the Pacific Ocean and are close to the line.
To be very technically correct, I don't like the answer above. I guess I had forgotten, and would prefer the "anti-meridian."

I know the answer already. Was asked this in a group session at work. Team building thing. It started a huge augment and a few people still don't believe it. The farthest east is a surprise.

stevej37 11-24-2020 11:03 AM

That's why this is such a good question...it makes someone think 'outside the box' (no more hints...someone will get it)

The extremes of east and west are not based on the Prime Meridian. That's the starting point of east and west, so if you are near the Prime Meridian, you are as least East or West as you can be.

The states that are closest to the Anti-Meridian from each direction would then be the farthest east and west.

It looks like I was close/half correct.

The Aleutian islands extend past the Anti-Meridian which makes Alaska the state that is both the farthest east and the farthest west. (which would be fubar if you used the actual Intl Date line since due to political borders, the Intl date line curves out to ensure that all of the US is on the same side.

Sooner or later 11-24-2020 11:04 AM

If Steve gives the answer I think he is going to give there damn sure will be an argument here....lol

Really?

Once the answer is out, it should be simple and irrefutable what the answer is. Are the folks that are still arguing also flat-earthers?

stevej37 11-24-2020 11:06 AM

Can a person change their user name on PP??

That's crazy.

"Dude, here's a picture"

stevej37 11-24-2020 11:09 AM

I will go on to say that googling the answer will leave no doubts.

Just don't google it until someone gets the answer.

Sooner or later 11-24-2020 11:12 AM

Didn't masraum nail it?

stevej37 11-24-2020 11:12 AM

Did we get any answers out yet?

I may be behind here. Which post?

stevej37 11-24-2020 11:16 AM

I still am not sure of an answer.
Please repeat?
