One of the few redeeming qualities of driving long distances on Thanksgiving to visit relatives is the anticipation of finding a radio station somewhere, anywhere, that plays Alice's Restaurant at noon.

18 and a half minutes of pure driving bliss.

Rose Mary, did you get that down, dear?

I used to live in Stockbridge. And the "church" is actually closer to Housatonic...

One of the Field Engineers I worked with hung out with Alice and that crowd before Arlo Guthrie was around. He got into some trouble with "Officer Obie" and ended up in front of the local judge. He was given a choice: Go to Prison or Join the Military. He joined the Coast Guard, figuring he would not end up in Vietnam...except he did...

What did he say about Alice? I always got the impression she was kind of taken advantage of by her younger hippie friends, but maybe she liked to play den mother to them. I always wondered. I'd love to hear if he had any personal impressions of her.

Doing a tour in the Coast Guard was still probably better duty than carrying a rifle for one of the less glamorous branches. I hope your friend came out of it well. He kind of reminds me of my church youth group leader when I was young. He graduated from high school in 1965 and was offered an all expenses paid visit to points east as an enlisted man. He figured that joining ROTC and going to college for four years and emerging as an officer was just the ticket to avoiding the draft and sitting on the sidelines long enough for the war to end. Inadvertently he graduated just in time to be commissioned for a four year commitment in 1969, which wasn't necessarily a good trade over a two year enlistment in 1965. But it did all work out for him. He was assigned as the officer in charge of the night train running between West Berlin and West Germany and completed his obligation to this man's army dodging only the infrequent shots of East Germain border guards firing at attempted escapees.

Back in the day........running the back roads in north Georgia in an 84 Carrera to have dinner with the parents in Dalton. 96 Rock always played Alice's Restaurant at noon.

Had a certain 10 mile stretch of twistys that was my favorite. A good time was sub 8 minutes......a personal Neurbergring......great memories. Thanks!

I only met Alice years later when she was running the Appletree inn in Lenox. She had split with everyone by then, as most people had moved on from being hippies.

Except Arlo. He actually had a very nice place north of Pittsfield. Lived next door to one of ex-Mrs-Beard's co-workers. He got locked out of his place and knocked on the door to use the phone. She would not let him in, cause he looked like he was homeless.

I was in Stockbridge with the Berkshire Theater Company's "farm team" from SUCO (State University Campus Oswego) some time after Alice move to a restaurant out of town. There was a coffee shop in the church where her restaurant had been. Had breakfast there every morning. I can't remember the name of the bar (Town Tavern maybe?) that we went to in the evenings. Office Obie was there drinking beer almost every night.

The same here, driving to my grandparents house. And then the Twilight Zone marathon on KTLA 5.

You can get anything you want at Alices Restaurant... except Alice.

And can you, can you imagine 50 people a day, I said 50 PEOPLE A DAY, walking in, singing a bar of Alice's Restaurant, and walking out. And friends, they may think it's a movement. And that's what it is. The Alice's Restaurant anti massacre movement. And all you've got to do to join is sing it the next time it comes around on the guitar.

With feeling.

I've seen Arlo live several times. His concerts are best in small venues where you can really enjoy his rambles.

About twenty years ago, I was at a party and a good friend and co-worker of my son's started in on the monologue. I had my guitar, so accompanied him through the whole thing. Great times.

The song lasted a lot longer than the restaurant.

Best

I had no idea on the Thanksgiving AR deal: I apparently didn't get a seat at the cool kids table

I do love the song "City of New Orleans".

Arlo recently announced that he was done touring due to health reasons.

Son, have you ever been arrested?

there is a radio station in freedom CA just below santa cruz that is broadcast in monterey county and points south as far as san luis obispo called KPIG that plays it every turkeyday at noon and 6PM. i used to time the drive to my folks' place every thanksgiving so i would get in signal range just before it started and it would end about the time i pulled into the driveway.

As I was prepping the turkey on Thursday I was pleasantly surprised by a segment in NPR’s Morning Edition on Alice herself. They told her story and interviewed her and a number of her friends. It sounds like she was a little older than the youngsters who gathered around her and she took it on as her mission to help them out. She said that she gave a job to anyone who asked for one, because she knew if they were asking for a job they needed money, so she gave them a job. I had always wondered if she had felt taken advantage of by the merry pranksters who gravitated to her or is she wanted to care for her wayward flock. It sounded like she did enjoy helping people who needed some help and guidance in their lives, and she said that somehow she always found the money to help people. The infamy from Arlo helped; she was able to make money selling Alice’s cookbooks and other things, but she ran a successful business for many year

She’s in her 80s now and in poor health. Some of the people who she helped when they were young put together a Go Fund Me page to help her out. It was really a nice segment. I was happy to have heard a little about Alice herself.

Only thing I got is around 1973 buddy and I went to the midnight movie at the mall and they played Fantasia and Alice's Restaurant.

Mescaline employed as a mood enhancer.

I do remember in line to get in, some fool called a police officer a "Pig" and that was a really, really bad idea. His ask was on the ground and in cuffs in nine point six seconds. He got to spend the night with some new friends.....and missed the movies.
