Every once in a while, I check to see....

if Chuck Yeager is still with us, and thankfully he still is at 97 yrs. The world will be a lesser place when he goes, if he goes. He may live forever. BOOM.

Does a sonic BOOM have one boom or two

Chuck Yeager is the man, for sure.

Dang. I do the same thing. Major Dick Winters (Easy Company, Band of Brothers) died a few years ago and no one knew until months later. As I recall, that was what he and the family wanted.

I'm going to make my 20 yo son read Yeager's book over the Christmas break. Hell of a man and patriot.

Yeager will never die. He'll just go so fast that we can't see him anymore.

Hmm, I'll bet that's an interesting read.

I do the same. His good friend Bud Anderson (Old Crow) is still with us as well.

My Grandfather used to talk with him when he lived in Nevada City. He'd see him at the dump. I think my Grandfather sold him his old International pickup years ago.

It is! There is a section where he discusses his own shootdown and walk to Spain during WWII. Real man stuff.

Also his recollection of Edwards AFB and the test pilot stuff is incredible. They and their families endured some pretty spartan conditions. The woman, Pancho, that owned the bar (Happy Bottom Riding Club) in the movie, really took care of them, including paying for medical care. I won't give away the story but it is really incredible.

Great Idea. When I was homeschooling my son, I assigned a paper and he chose to research Yeager. It was amazing to have my son teaching me something as we discussed his readings at dinner.

General Yeager

I met Chuck Yeager many years ago after his book came out (1986). He was selling and signing copies of his book at the Cabela's in Owatonna. So I drive 85 miles down there to get my book signed and went in the store. They directed me to the upper level in the far back corner of the store. I go up the stairs and sitting at a table all alone is General Chuck Yeager. There is nobody else anywhere on the floor. So I walk up and say hello and ask him to sign my book. He was very cordial and we chatted briefly, then I said goodbye and left. I got the impression he was just a regular guy that also had extraordinary skill once he got into an aircraft.

Thirty-five years after reading the book I still remember the story about getting shot down, hiding out in a French farm house, riding to the mountains in a hay wagon, walking toward Spain, he & his partner getting shot at by a German patrol in the dark, amputating his buddy's lower leg and then carrying him into Spain on his back, walking into the U.S. embassy. What a story. And back in a P-51 in a few weeks.

Him & Sullenberger. What a pair. They define something for us all.

In avaition we straighten up and fly right. Chuck is always going to be The Man! Before 2000, Merica kicked butt in everything, now we are hibernating, Put away those cell phones, and stop playing video games, and start designing something Merica! Nobody cares if you scored high on doom. Where is warp drive? And where are teleporters and big starships? Those are jobs right there. Git rid of the riff raff and be great once more! Merica!

I was the OP on this thread last week, and I had no idea he was dying. I am so sorry to hear of his passing today.

I really did check on his well being from time to time, I thought he would live forever.

That's all I got.
