How many of you guys had a slingshot when you were a kid?
I was going to buy one for my son for Xmas but my wife stopped me. “Are you crazy? Do you want him to hurt himself or others? Do you want to get sued?” Why didn’t my parents care about those things back then? For the record, I only shot at cans and birds. Can’t we trust our kids to do the same nowadays?

Yes, I had a slingshot but I'm sure I had to buy it for myself. I doubt my mom would have allowed it.

I made my young son one out of a y shaped stick we found in the back yard and some rubber bands. He was using it to shoot foam balls. He loved that thing!

I bought some and made some. In sixth grade I made a miniature one out of a hair pin and a rubber band. It did a great job and was deadly accurate with spit wads during class.

I made a sling. It consisted of a couple of feet of cord and a pouch. I could send a stone almost 100 feet, but accuracy was non existant,as I found out when I smashed the headlight out of a car. The car belonged to a friend of my dad. They were about 50 feet behind me when the stone came out prematurely and broke the headlight of the car beside them. I was darned lucky I didn't hit one of them.

This. Forked stick and a couple of lengths of surgical tubing with part of an old leather shoe tongue for a pocket. Worked fine, cost nothing.
(Sorry about your wing-tips, Dad. I had no idea those were your favorites.....) Those fancy wrist rockets I'd see in the back of Boys Life and Popular Science were too rich for my blood...

We (my brother and I) had a wrist rocket that we found somewhere. It was fun until someone took it away from us.

Did you ever notice that your accuracy improved when you used ball bearings instead of rocks?

I still do have one.
It's one of those steel framed with good rubber that you buy from a sports shop. When my cat was getting older the other cats in the hood were trying to take over her position as top cat. I got pretty good with it. I fair sconned a few cats who were about to give my cat some grief. |

I wanted one, but didn't have one. Instead I had a BB gun.

My 3 brothers and I had homemade ones that my grandfather cut out of 3/4" oak and had strips of intertubes for the bands. We used the heck out of them and they were a blast. I made one for my son when he was old enough.

Parentals bought me a 'wrist rocket'. But no way in hell were they ever going to buy me a BB gun. Odd huh?

Hell yeah I had one! It was one of those fancy ones with the wrist brace and the heavy rubber band. Before that my brothers and I would make them out of sticks and cut them out of left over wood we could find.

I "may" have seen a funnel and some water balloons sent off the roof of my college fraternity one time.

Damn! I had those dime store slingshots. However, What worked best at close range were rubber bands and folded paper. Deadly accurate and highly concealable.

Made a bunch, nothing ever workable. Also had a wrist rocket.
The most damaging weapon I ever had was a simple rubber band in school. We’d fold up paper as the missiles and fire those at each other. Inevitably this led to an arms race with bigger rubber bands and more lethal materials for the missiles. We learned what mutually assured destruction was a few weeks in when someone brought in sheetmetal they folded up on his dad’s brake. We decided to find something else to entertain ourselves. |

Giving him a slingshot and showing him how and when to use it could be great lessons in responsibility. Do it. Just don't give it to him and walk away.
