I hope so too, but I'm not optimistic. He has a lot of just plain bad luck, but also a lot of self-inflicted bad luck. He parked his wrecked truck next to his barn - about 100 yards away from the house. The thieves had a lot of interest in the truck. They convinced him they could make it driveable again (no way in hell). They stole the key to the barn, and spent a lot of time back there. MrsWD saw them drive out with the lights off at about midnight one night last week, when D. was in bed asleep. They are both convicted drug dealers. Who wouldn't put two and two together and conclude that they were stashing product back there, either in the truck on in the barn? The sheriff deputy is scheduled to come out as soon as he can with the county's drug sniffing dog to see if our theory is correct. So D. calls a junker and has the truck hauled away. There goes possible evidence, and maybe some of the stuff they stole from him. The sheriff is really bending over backwards to help and he just gets in the way. It's easy to say, "I give up," but so hard to actually abandon him.

It just gets worse. His brother in law died Tuesday.
I've never seen a man so broken and depressed.
I told him, from my experience with being robbed, that he will keep finding things missing for quite a while and it will just jamb the knife in again, so get ready.
When I put the new lock on his barn for him he looked around and said everything looked fine. Last week he called me up to ask if I had his chain saws. Nope, they were stolen out of the barn. A few days later he called, "I just realized my portable generator is gone!" Stolen out of the barn. He needed his second key fob for his car for some reason and went to get it - gone. Every few days he discovers something else gone and it sends him deeper into depression.
Every few days he drives over to the town the thief frequents to see if he can find him. The guy is only 66 but he has osteoporosis so bad he looks like he is 90. I don't know how tall he is, but he looks like he weighs 120lb max. I don't know what he would do if he DID find him, but I'm pretty sure it would generate more "bad luck" for him.

Unfortunately it sounds like your neighbor has reached a point in life and mentally that if he finds the perp he may just shoot him or run him over with his car . It sounds like he has nothing to lose , I mean that from where he is mentally . He goes to jail/prison and a lot of his miserable life is behind him . He needs professional help before he kills himself or someone else . I feel bad for the guy .

This story gets more bizarre by the day. Stay with me, this is weird.
Yesterday Neighbor got a call from the county jail a couple of counties away. The POS who robbed him was calling to get Neighbor to advance him bail money! He got arrested and is in jail on 5 felony counts. Neighbor obviously said NFW and the kid said, "Well, can you at least call my sister? She won't take my calls."
Neighbor, for some reason called her on his behalf.
Turns out she won't take calls from jails anymore because she's had it with trying to help her POS brother.
They got to talking, and she said, "Wait. Are you the guy he stole all that stuff from?"
Apparently the fact that the kid robbed him was common knowledge among the riff raff he hangs out with.
She asked, "Did you happen to lose a set of German china in zippered gray leatherette cases?"
Him - "Yes. I still have some things that weren't in the cases."
Her - "Like a sugar bowl and creamer?"
Him - "Yes, they are on my table right now."
Her - "Well, I have the rest of the set. POS brother gave them to me for Christmas. Did he take some jewelry?"
him - "Yes, diamond necklaces and rings."
Her - "Can you send me pictures?"
Neighbor sent insurance pictures of the necklace.
Her - "I know where the necklace is. A family friend got that necklace from POS brother for Christmas. Her husband is a gun and coin dealer and got two guns and some silver dollars from him too."
Him - "He took two guns and some coins, but I don't have any pictures. I only have the serial number for the 9MM pistol."
Her - "I know. The friend's husband was complaining that the old service revolver didn't have a serial number."
Her - " I will get the china set back to you ASAP. I'll also call the family friend and tell her the jewelry and guns were stolen by POS brother and are hot and they'd better not be caught with them in her possession. I'll offer to hold them for her. If she turns them over to me I'll return them to you."
To be continued...

A well earned blessing in the form of a sister who gives a damn.
