iCloud
I have a MacBook Air and I bought plenty-o-storage on iCloud. I started copying music files to iCloud, and there they are on iCloud Drive, but they are taking up space on the hard drive, which is now full. 121GB on the HD, which is now full. 80GB copied, which apparently are on the HD. Again, "iCloud Drive" is where I can now find these music files, and there is 2TB of storage on iCloud, but now i cannot copy any more files (80GB already copied) because the HD is full. Computers piss me off.

Hey, anyone replaced the drive on the air ? Darn thing’s flashing the darn folder with the question mark.
It just works, until they don’t. Is the OS upgrade able or is this another Mac brick ? |

I think for my wife with her old phone, I uploaded all pics, turned off icloud for pics from her phone and then deleted all of the pics from her phone. We've since replaced our phones, and got 1 year old NIB phones at a huge discount that also happened to have max storage (512G) which should save us from that sort of issue in the future, at least for a while. |

Thank you. Does this mean iCloud cannot increase my storage capacity? Because whatever is in iCloud must also be stored on the HD?

I did do that. Which I will undo, if it is meaningless. It appears my HD has 122GB of space. I bought 2TB of iCloud space, thinking I could store my music files there, to use with iTunes. What I mistaken?

But then the OS upgrade might need jumping through Mac hoops ...

If you have a USB port or two, buy a couple of usb/harddrive docking stations and pop a 8TB drive in each one. I have a pair hooked up to my PC and so far in the past few years have then about 25% filled. One does back ups of the other 4 drive inside my PC (I know it's not a MAC but.....) the idea is the same.

Hey you, get off of miCloud!
I'm wif Mick ;) |
I do have a couple of external HDs. I just thought it would be more convenient not to have to have them plugged in to use iTunes. Also, iCloud would be a backup, in case of HD failure. But now I find that, in addition to renting iCloud space, I would also need a subscription to either Apple Music or iTune Match. Without this subscription, Apple will not allow me to store music on iCloud that I did not purchase from Apple.
This is about the thousanth time I have been highly frustrated by Apple. |
I was going to suggest to use iTunes Match and have the music matched to Apple’s media and what doesn’t match will automatically be uploaded. Once you get the little cloud icon in iTunes you can delete the media locally and have everything in the “cloud” and available on all your devices that use the same iTunes account. Then use your iCloud storage for files, pictures, etc and not wasted on music storage. If at anytime you want your music you can download the media and move to on-premise storage.

I have said it before and I am happy to repeat, iTunes is the very worst bottom of the barrel program ever fostered upon the world. It is just garbage, and I hate it. I only use it to back up my phone to my computer, and I gave up trying to use it to sync videos and especially photos.
They (Apple) tries HARD to make it useless to sort and arrange photos. It is the one thing I hate about using a iPhone, iTunes sucks. |
Thank you. Yes, I find iTunes very frustrating. It might make more sense to just get an MP3 player. But one of my goals is the ability to play music from a hand-held player, or from my MacBook Air. I do not know how to play music in my Mac without using iTunes. In fact, I don't know much about computers and I may just go to a trusted computer business for consultation, so that I might know what my options are.
There is only 80 GB of free space on the Mac's HD. I have about 300 GB of music. The last thing I tried was to connect the MAC to an external HD containing this music, and pointing iTunes there. Nope. It filled the HD and locked up. There may be a way that I can use iTunes with an external HD, and still avoid locking up the Mac internal HD. |

VLC can also both generate and consume a stream. If you've got the inclination to learn the geek skills a raspberry pi and some external storage could set up your own private streaming service in your house and stream to all of your clients. |
Since we are on the subject of music files, what about YouTube music? Discuss.

Plex is an option as well if you have another old computer or network storage. It can stream through your phone, PC, whatever, even on thr road.

I think there is a device I can get which hooks to my router, and allows full library access from any place that has wifi. I am really technology-dumb. |

I don't feel like writing more documentation (I've been overhauling my courses to teach the new term) but this should get you some idea as the process and let you decide if you want to tackle it. https://www.makeuseof.com/tag/4-ways-set-up-raspberry-pi-media-server/ |
