What adhesive what I use to bond aluminum to a bumper cover.

What adhesive what I use to bond aluminum to a bumper cover?

The bumper cover on my BMW has a very short flange where it meets the fender. I was thinking about cutting notches for the contour and bonding a thin piece of L-shaped aluminum to extend the bumper flange.

What is the best adhesive to adhere the aluminum to the bumper cover?

I’m at Lowe’s, so if anybody has a quick answer, let me know.

Thanks!

Latest jb weld adventure was to use a strip of aluminum can to patch a hole in a light tower spot light dome. Works.

3M DP8005 is what you want. Remove the oxide from the aluminum first with clean sandpaper and follow the directions. This was formulated for bonding low energy materials such as this.

Whatever you choose, get the aluminium (probably plastic too) VERY clean with paint thinners or acetone. And as Billy said rough it up with sandpaper to get the oxide off and to give the glue something to hang on to.

It’s not a total beater, but a possible track car, so I tabled the pop rivet idea and wanted to go with a permanent but hidden system.

For now, I used #6 st st machine screws with washers and nuts. There just isn’t a lot of meat on the bumper cover lip to work with.

Are you guys talking about the two part JB Weld epoxy or the old standby black and white mix.

For extra adhesion, I was going to drill small holes in the aluminum.

I did the EXACT same repair on my Allmand Brothers Maxi-Lite. It still holds 8 years later.

There is bumper cover adhesive specifically for repairing bumper covers. Go to NAPA and get some or order it online...
