Mercedes: great engineers/driver/strategist/luck they are tough to beat .
|
After the race, when Lewis was being interviewed, he said he learned a lot about the Red Bull and Max's style from following for much of the race. Is he playing games with Max's head now?

Best race of the year coming up!

Some of the scenery can be nice, though :D Best Les |
It's always been my favorite race of the year, no matter what. The walls, tunnels, buildings, can't go out of bounds there.

I love the Monaco race. The last several years we’ve been on vacation during the race which makes it challenging to find a place to watch it but some how I always have. Seems like Brits are the only others in the bar watching. In 2019 we were in France and took a train to Monaco to walk through course. It’s really amazing how fast they’re going in such a small town. Especially surprising was the speed coming into casino square and the chicane by the harbor. The chicane is inches from water! Of course we had to stop for a beer at rascasse :). One of these days I’ll start scheduling vacation around races.

I find the Monaco race to be pretty to watch but there is almost zero drama normally. Unless someone blows up the chicane coming out of the tunnel or tosses it into a wall, well anywhere. But qualifying is another thing. There is no more dramatic Q3 during the year as the top drivers are on such a fine line of 'fast or crash'. The videos of Senna doing qualifying pretty much one handed is absolutely epic.

Yahoo needs an editor.
According to the copy, McLaren sits tenth in the Constructors standings. Cool livery, errors notwithstanding. |

Captain, that's a good one. ;)

Free practice 2: top times by the Ferraris, with LeClerc slightly ahead. Times are close to qualifying a couple of years ago.
I'm stoked. Best Les |

Did I watch it? Probably.
Do I remember it? Lord man, i have trouble remembering what I had for breakfast and that race was 11 years ago! :D Best Les |
Danny Ric really off the pace and Vettel faster than his teammate . But I seriously doubt anyone is showing all they have .

Monaco. It’s a free municipality. Best wishes to whomever earns pole (P1).

Monaco does have some beautiful views :D
Surprised no one has brought up the topic of 'bendy wings' as the subject is getting a lot of airtime this side of the pond so I'm interested to hear what folk think I've got a crystal clear view on the legality of this and in my past F1 life helped stir up the exact same situation with the FIA that is happening this year. Are Redbull cheating or just exploiting a loophole? |
I don't understand the bendy wing thing. Isn't the bodywork always subject to flexing under load? So all parts will flex a bit.
|
Now we're into definitions.
Exploiting a loophole: if you thought of it. Cheating: if your opponent thought of it. I'm guessing there will be one less car on track for Q1. Best Les |
Wow, what an ending to Qualifying! Will have to see if any serious damage to P1.
Other surprises: Vettel shows he still has (some of) it. And Giovinazzi in the top 10! For a guy that has otherwise had a nondescript F1 career, that's got to be encouraging for him and Alfa. |
I wonder when Ferrari will let us know if they have to replace the box.
|
They have said "No serious damage" visible to trans but they will decide Sunday morning. According to F1 news now. Hope that holds.

How does a Virtual Safety Car (VSC) work? I understand the concept: there's some sort of incident on the track, it's worse than just a local yellow so the stewards want all the drivers to drive at slower than race pace (about 70% of normal race pace) around the entire track, but it's not so dangerous that the Bernd and the Safety Car actually have to be deployed to bunch up the pack. So some sort of light goes on on the dashes of the race car (and lit signs around the track), and all cars are expected to drive at about 70% of normal race pace. If they go too fast, then they'll be penalized.
But how do the drivers know what a 70% lap time is? Even as good drivers as they are, there's no way for them to think "OK, I'll just drive at 7/10s now" and be accurate. How do they actually know that they're driving to make those sector times at 70% speed/time, and not 60% or 75%? Too slow and you'll lose out to your competitors. Too fast and you'll be penalized. It can't be something as simple as the pitlane speed limiter, is it? |

I'm not gonna lie; I'm so glad that pole position went to other than a MB/RBR for the first time in forever, and Ferrari sure has suffered the last cuppla years, so good on them, mate, but I am not warming up to Chuck LeClerk - I find him insufferable for some reason - so I was really hoping that Carlos Sainz's son would have outqualified Msr LeClerc. It seems pretty suspicious that with seconds left in Q3 he went and pulled a Michael Schumacher and stuffed the wall after setting top time.
The fix is in!!! |
I feel bad for Mick.
I didn't like Norris very much until this season. But the kid has got race pace and now qualifying pace too. Hard to understand what's going on with Danny Ric. |
