I've always liked the El Camino- maybe some day I'll get around to it. I like the '66s and '70-72s the best. My boss in 1974 had a '68-69 and my recollection was it drove like a Cadillac. One of my ex's had a '77 and it was nice to drive. Anyway, to be like Glen, your opportunity awaits on BaT;

My second job out of college was at a pretty good size foliage nursery in Apopka. I was the head grower with 5 growers under me. This was around 1978. The head mechanic there drove one. He was a cool guy. Dave was his name. He cleaned the engine compartment of my Volvo 145 wagon a couple times using kerosene and a pressure washer siphon gun. Did a great job.

10 bags of cotton seed hulls, 6 bags of soil, 10 bags of shredded cedar mulch. I have hauled $390,000 aerial camera systems or just my wife's garden needs and furniture and lots of things over the years.



Just styling. It is a rare week someone does not comment on it, and I get offers to sell it all the time. I bought it in 1991, so 30 years ago. 372,000 miles and shining nice paint, it has no door dings at all. It certainly has some patina, but it is a car, no, it is a truck worth more than I paid for it after all those years and miles.

My old high school shop teacher has a '65 with over 450,000 miles. On it's 2nd engine; a 283/3 on the tree.

Back in the early 70's, he'd load 5 motorcycles and 5 guys in the cab to head over the mountains to dirt bike. 4 bikes in the bed and one on a bumper rack. Air shocks saved the day. Happy times.

Now, he is almost 80, can't get out much and EC sits; rusting in his driveway........

I put Bilstiens on mine all around long ago, so no air shocks, but air bags inside the rear shocks is easy and works great for loads.

My OEM 305 only went 300,000 miles before it was pretty much worn out. I bought a brand new GM crate 350 for $1,700 delivered to my door. I did the engine swap over the long Thanksgiving weekend. My original 3 speed Metric 200 transmission only went 85,000 miles so I replaced it with a 2004R with lockup at 50 MPH. It is like a 5 speed transmission. I had to replace the 2:11 rear end since it was so tall. I put in a 3:08 limited slip rear.

Recently I had a large transmission leak. Turns out the yoke on the driveshaft is good for only 370,000 miles before a grove wears in it and it starts to eat the seal. So a new yoke for $30 and a new seal and that if fixed. My drivetrain from the radiator to the rear end is all replaced. The front end has all been rebuilt and refurbished. Like my 911 I would drive it anywhere in the country. Unlike my 911 I would prefer not to, as it does indeed have wind noise from the frameless windows.

The AC will make me cold in 15 minutes of driving after sitting in the full sun all day. It is the same AC system they put in station wagons. For a two person cab, it is overkill and works great.

I put the factory computer controlled Rochester carburetor up in my attic and installed throttle body fuel injection 15 years ago. It starts and runs like a modern car.

One big reason I have a 1986 El Camino and a 1985 911 is there is always some project I can go tinker on in the garage. It is just part of the hobby. And not one car payment in this millennium.

The wife for sure, no contest. I can't imagine any reasonable reason I can't keep both vehicles. Both are long ago paid for, and cheap to insure, and I have a 3 car garage and a place for all the cars inside.

I have long said I have the El Camino to haul stuff, and the 911 to haul ass. I can't imagine giving up the 911 and autocrosses and track days. And the utility of the Elky as a daily driver is just too high. My wife's car is the garage queen. It is a 2017 model and has just 15,000 miles. It is her daily driver, but she is retired so she goes for days at a time without driving it.

99% of the time when we go somewhere, anywhere, we go in the Elky. Up 100 miles each way to visit her mom, or the one mile trip to get milk and fruit at the local store.

I hated El Caminos for most of my life. I was wrong. Even the styling of the mid 70s has grown on me. I think it is the flying buttresses . . .

The G body GMs are really well styled. A local guy has a two door Malibu that’s quite the sleeper. Handsome, and the right size.

Some of the strange coincidences between my 911 and the El Camino:

Both were bought as used cars, both are white with a burgundy interior. The interiors are virtually the same color, the El Camino's paint is a bit more yellowish of white. The 911 is Grand Prix white.

Both are called the G body by their manufacturers. So I can say I always drive a white G body.

When I was shopping for the vehicles I can say I instantly disregarded black or red cars as not for me, but I was open to other colors, and mostly I looked for quality and walked away from many turds.

El Caminos are usually at four levels, beat to death from someone trying to use them as a real pickup truck, totally rotted out from sitting outside for 30 years, turned into drag racers with stripped interiors and giant HP engines, or show cars in perfect condition. Mine is a oddball in that it is very clean, looks better than 98% of the other Elkys and it gets driven a lot and has high mileage.

My 911 is much like other 911s on this board, but after 26 years of ownership it is 100% my car and tweaked to fit my wants. Killer good AC, and all the little projects from bumper to bumper have been done.

With either car all the systems from cruise control the drive train work as factory designed, or often even better than sold by the factory. I can't blame the previous owners for much.

My DNA is on pretty much all parts or systems of both cars.

That's an impressive amount of work on the Elky. It makes me wonder if you work on other stuff also to stay proficient, or do you ramp it up as the need arises?

I had a friend back in the day with one of these. He put a high horsepower engine in it. I forget the details, but the displacement number started with a "4." That thing was scary fast. El Caminos RAWK.

Yea, this. Lots of blood and sweat and no tears or other forms of DNA . Hunks of skin from my knuckles and arms. And my initials in places of my cars most owners never see in their cars. Like a Kilroy was here, only my initials and a date instead.

I love my cars, but not THAT much.

Really should have kept my 1965.

Sold it to my brother and then helped him built it into a low rider. Daytons and everything. Sold for twice what we paid for it.
