Why am I the diabetic when there are waaay fatter dudes and chicks who aren’t?

I exercise almost daily, walk/jog about 2.3 miles every time and also lift weights. I watch what I eat but ice cream calls my name on the weekends. Anyway, I have friends and family members who are way heftier than I and less active too, yet they’re not diabetic. Life truly isn’t fair. I thought I’d vent. Thanks fellas.

welcome to the club none of us wanted to join. Ask about classes on nutrition for diabetics. Many HMO's offer them. Maybe you could get to not needing meds. I wasn't that lucky, but many have done it.

Life is not fair.

Says the guy driving the Porsche.

Grab some perspective.

That sounds harsh but, take a look at what's going on around you in the world man.

I just found out diabetes shortens lifespan by 10 years no matter how well I take care of myself.

My mom had diabetes, passed away at 97 of complications from a broken hip due to a fall.
Are you telling me she could have lived to 107, or beyond?

Just because I don't eat sweets doesn't mean life has lost its sweetness. Gratitude isn't about what you can't, it is about what you can. I can do a lot of things. I just can't sit down with one of those coffee drinks full of milk and sugar or I will drop like a mother. I don't fight that in my head anymore.

BTW, a lot of fat people are constantly eating to manage their blood sugar levels. They just don't know it.

Runs in my family, so I was bound to get Type 2 eventually. My downfall is eating anything after 8PM.

Sorry to hear this. If you are newly diagnosed, make sure your medical team are sure you are type 2. If it was a slow progression to get there then it is likely correct.

A lot of the statistics on life span you see include data with a lot of people who don't control their blood sugars well.

I recommend checking out the books written by this guy, former mayor of Anchorage.

Rick Mystrom | Acknowledged Diabetes & Weight Loss Authority

I was diagnosed type 1 at 54. You guys complaining about diabetes with type 2 are cute :-)

Yes it sucks. Cards that I have been dealt I’m afraid. I’m avoiding sugar and carbs. Eat brown rice for example instead of white. Fiber is good! Taking a low dose prescription once a day. Better than insulin which I’m trying to avoid down the road. Bottom line is there is only so much you can do. Try to lessen the risk.

Seriously? I have to find better, more uplifting type 2 diabetes reading material.

I'm 77...still get around okay. So how long do you want to live, anyway?

I do miss sweet stuff, though. Hate the TV ads touting things laden with carbs. Part of it the forbidden fruit syndrome. "I can't have it..therefore I want it."

If I ever get suicidal, I'll head to a bakery...

Think about it...all we know is that yes, we're going to die. Few know when.

Luck of the draw as I see it. My grandfather was diabetic and died of diabetes related kidney failure. They say (don't know it it's true) it skips a generation. I found out I'm prediabetic and have cronic kidney failure, which seems to have stabilized at around 40% for now. My A1c level was 6.6 when I found out. I cut way down on sweets & carbs & my A1c level was 6.2 last time tested. Lastly my wife & I have been on that intermittent fasting diet regimen where you eat during an eight hour period and fast for the other sixteen. I haven't had my blood sugar checked since and am curious what it will be. I'm hoping it has had a positive effect. I find avoiding sweets and carbs become easier as time goes along as you try to establish a new pattern. I still allow myself an ocassional treat but find I seem to enjoy that sort of thing less as time goes on and don't feel especially good after eating something sweet. Don't know if that's phychological or not. By the way, I'm 78, 5'10", & weigh 170. My only negative is I don't do as much exercising as I should. Seems like the reduction in incentive is age related.

I feel the same way with my 3X Hodgkins Lymphoma diagnosis, along with my new pace maker after repeated heart failure, blood clots, and low kidney function.

I hike, bike, kayak, cut 5 cords of firewood every year, and do all sorts of farm projects while some of my lazy friends have never visited thier doctor, but play video games until all hours of the night (I have 3 specialists that I see each one quarterly).

Great post for awareness. I have had at least two friends die from diabetes complications.

For those who don't get blood tests much or have a family history of diabetes, I suggest getting a One Touch Ultra 2 blood glucose monitor. We have one and I test monthly, first thing after waking. Finger prick for a drop of blood and then transfer to the disposable test strip. Knowing your numbers instantly, you can adjust diet to see if glucose levels drop. Very useful device.
